I've never been a big fan of Redline, but alot of people are. Many on this site swear by Royal Purple, but the slipperyest stuff I've ever seen is a brand called Motul (Motul 400 i think, GL-5, 75/90 full syn for manual trans) but like you, I saw only minimal improvement over stock.

I think we just need a new transmission!

Mine got better after Royal Purple Gear Max. I put it in the tranny and rear diff. Tranny still not perfect, but better.

I am almost positive that the shifting issues are more due to the clutch not the transmission itself. I have issues putting my car into second gear at a stop light but if I hold it where it gets stuck while slowly releasing the clutch it falls in.

YES, I tried the red line 75-90 and saw no diff in my shift.--i just get just a slight gear clash,,- now and then from the AY6.--So i took that fluid out, and went with red line MTL 70 W 80.- This looks like trans fluid but is for trans's.-And it is syn, and a GL4 CLASS.-In which i saw the cadilac used, that a few years back.- Ive only driven car 20 miles prior to posting this - and WOW SMOOTH SHIFT,,And it cut down on the noise level of actually putting in gear. Ill keep you posted

yes after doing talks with trans guys who have rebuilt these and other GM manual trans, --it comes down to the AY6 needs transaxle fluid, NOT GEAR OIL !!!! - AND ALL THREE SAID SAME THING right off the bat when i told the gear clash going into gear,,, get the gear oil out and add, synthetic trans axle fluid ,,example would be RED LINE MTX.-- It LOOKS LIKE automatic fluid but is not.---Mine is getting smoother by the miles just like trans guy said it would. ----P.S. --- WHEN GM ADDED THIS TRANS to the cadilac it orig used this type oil -GL4 RATED.- Wonder why they changed

I would be careful changing to any fluid not GM approved. It could be a basis for warranty denial on your tranny..

the red line # i used is 50204.--AND if anyone still complains about a gear clash at all or hard going into most gears ? oh well then, keep your rear end fluid in there.- P.S. - I work at a chrysler dealer and we had had issues over the years of same thing with manual trans that orig had a rear end gear oil in them.-Now they run on tranaxle fluid like i posted .-mmmmmmmmmmm

Carl, this could be a very expensive experiment!

But you've got me thinking....I'd try about anything to improve the trans-
it ruins my enjoyment of the rest of the car.

I thought the shifter was the problem, turns out the stock shifter was just
a very good disguiser of the real problem: the synchro's or maybe the whole transmission.

yea, but is a hell of alot better.--- wonder why when gm orig used it on the cadilac it called for a gl4 rated fluid not the gl5 ,,mmmmmm- Also i just put complaint in to the NHTSA, AND hoping others will ,---enough of our whinning ,,and posting issues,-- lets do something.-- gotta call gm now.-- number in owner manul --- P.S. I think the v8 manul trans guys run the tranaxle type fluid [stock] that looks like tran fluid
