Winter Detail
While it is technically considered winter here in AZ, the high today was 70. None the less, it makes for a great year around detailing season. Wasn't really planning on doing so much today but finally finished 5 hours later...
Started with detailing the engine bay. This is the first time this engine bay has been cleaned since I bought the car which was 15 months ago. Lots of dirt, grime and water spots from previous washes/rain. I played it safe and put bags around the air intake and the alternator (which was a bitch to find all the way down there). Here are the end results, turned out looking great. (What sickens me is I remember my mother years ago paying $90 to have her car's engine bay detailed by the dealership. This was of course prior to me getting into detailing.) The last time I washed my car I wasn't too satisfied with the beading and knew my sealant and wax were probably degraded from the last application so I decided to prep for new layers of LSP. Did a dawn soap wash and pulled into the garage to dry. Performed a baggie test and the paint was a bit rough so I decided to clay also. The car was pretty dirty from a storm we had come through a few days back. Took a break after claying and ran to subway to chow down. Didn't see a need for polishing at this time, nor the time or patience. Was only able to clay and seal half the car at a time because of the angle of the sun. While I was waiting for one half to haze in the shade I detailed the wheels, tires, interior and glass. I now wear gloves when sealing because the sealant gets all over my hands from the foam applicator, and as you can see here stained my drive way from an earlier detail. After sealing the whole car here is how it turned out. Will probably get around to some wax next week.

Great use of great weather, you did a fantastic job on the engine, and the paint.
I wish I had a 70* day lol, I got 1 hour today to wash in 50* so it could be worse! If you get another 70* day I'd paint those hubs/calipers. |

So it is okay to just spray down engine without fear of anything shorting out? Cover alternator and CAI and that's it?

Is the alternator wrap necessary or did you just do it as a fail safe? I have never washed my engine bay in this car or my old explorer so I am a bit squeamish to do so. I know I should wrap the CAI and fuse box I've heard but even in Adams video he doesn't do the alternator so I wasn't sure. Also any tips of for when you actually use water? I know not to use a power washer and it is recommended to just use a bare hose without the nozzle so that the force doesn't push water anywhere it shouldn't be. That about it?

^ curious about this too. Alternator need to be wrapped? And what part of CAI? Just the MAF sensor? Or filter and cover etc?

3 minutes in the mention air filters..... Stock V6 CAI I think are in a box no? I switched mine out for a K&N so it is exposed so I know to cover that. I figure if I cover the CAI and fuse box that should do it. I see people use pressure washers but I think I will just stick to the regular garden hose.
