Do I need to replace both rear tires?

Ran over a bolt and replaced one rear tire, 275/40/20. Measured tread difference when I got home, New tire has 4 or 5/32 more tread.

I’d rather not replace the other tire. Will I cause any stress on the rear differential?

Handling and braking will be compromised with that......

I don't remember if the new Pirellis begin with 8 or 10/32.
A tire is considered worn out at 2/32 so if you are at 3/32 it's not going to waste much to pair them up equally.
Some shops can sell used tires and will give you a few dollars if there is any life left to them.

BTW, the life span on tires is considered 5 years...

I double checked my tires.

New tire is about 11/32, old tire is about 6/32.

You are right. Went for a drive today and handling is significantly off. Left bias on moderate acceleration, immediate right bias when I change gears.

Time for another tire.
