Shift display

So I'm cruising around the mountains today and I took off in 1st and got up into 3rd and I noticed my shift display was on my center digital display. When I got my Camaro I was driving it back from the dealer flipping threw my displays but never saw this. Just curious on how and why this came up? It was gone by the time I hit 4th gear. Anyone know what's up?

1st to 4th shift. It's called a skip shift...where the car forces you to shift from 1st to 4th to save gas. It can be easily bypassed by getting a SSE from pretty much anyone. It's only $30 or so. It'll only come up from about 15 to 20 mph in 1st to save on gas.

I didn't think it would ever be an issue, but come to fine out that driving in the rain in stop and go traffic, I see it all too often... :(

V6 owners don't have this, I found out. I don't quite understand why the car would try to tell you how to shift. So when it gives you the 1-4, what happens when you shift to second? Does it get angry and yell at you?

Question, when you put the bypass harness in does the display still come up on the dash or does it completely disable it? Just got mine yesterday and was wondering

^That's what I mean...how does an electronic notification of a 1-4 shift stop you from manually cranking the gears from 1-2-3-4?

It locks out 2 and 3 forces you to go into 4th, in other words 4th is your only option. This has been a feature/annoyance for a long time (it is thought by GM to be a fuel mileage helper). Just get the harness to bypass it.

He was just saying the harness doesn't affect the display...

well I have a 6M 2ss/rs and I can tell you that when that comes up and you try to shift into 2nd it blocks it.

only way around it without a shift bypasser thinger is to either shift into 2nd before 15 mph or after 20 mph or just bring the rpm's up or drop off before you try 2nd. I never had an issue shifting into 3rd though. so instead of a 1 to 4 I was doing a 1 to 3 but that is not as smooth. so I just get in the habbit of pull the shifter down and not put any left angle on it into 2nd.

if you "drove it like you stole it" the bypasser never is an issue.
but in stop and go traffic with someone in front of you is when I usually in counter it and sometimes I shift 1 to 4 w/o prompt then 4 to 6. that's when I'm just driving it easy like.

if you reset your mpg on the DIC you can then take off in 1 -2-3-4 and see what it's ave is. then reset it the mpg and do the 1-4 and see the ave. 1-2-3-4 less of an ave then 1-4.

I think you need to be running 15 to 20 miles per hour with a rpm of less then 1800. the RPMs from my memory may be off.

Once you know it's there and how it works it's not much of a pain and if you do the 1-4 right you can't even tell you shifted.

It probably isnt so bad when you have gears in the car but when its stock and it goes 1st to 4th at that speed all it does it bog and jerk. really annoying
