My Mild ZL1 Build Plan

To start I think the ZL1 is the perfect fun car for me. It is very fast, handles mountain roads as if on rails, and if I turn the air on and go to tour mode, the ZL1 is a great touring car other than the rough ride. And I can even put a bunch of crap in the trunk with the seat folded down. But can I improve on perfection without ruining the basic goodness baked in by Chevy? Can I have a 10 second car without going crazy and not worry about going to the dealer?

I have been reading the forums and watching videos to get ideas about where I will go with this ZL1. From all my past experience modding cars I know to take it slow and carefully research each mod. Nothing radical here I want to keep this car long term. The ZL1 hits all my buttons as is. I just want to make it my own.

Phase 1.
Over all goals:
  • Traction improvement
  • Different Look
  • Lighter wheels
  • Heat Transfer
  • More SC whine
  • Deeper exhaust tone
  • 5 HP
The Mods:Possible Phase 2
I reserve the right to be happy with Phase 1, but as we all know power is addictive.

Over all goals:
  • More power
  • Keep the Stock look of the engine
  • Keep the great sounding exhaust from Phase 1
The Mods:
Thoughts?

I’m down for phase 2 but want a little less upper pulley just to
Give me some safe feeling that I’m not pushing it too hard. Looking into maybe a 2.2 griptec.

Also I have a Tony Mamo TB do might just stick with that unless there is a significant difference with the 103 TB

OOps ! I meant 9% I had the size backwards. I wanted the largest pulley. And the 103 has proven itself. A ported stocker (3 different Camaros) has not done anything for me in the past. No ET or drive-ability improvement I can feel. Opinions differ.

Added this to Phase 1:

ADM LT4 SC RESERVOIR

Adds a little SC coolant and lets you DIY the SC installation! Been looking for this.

My coworker mentioned his tuner told him that cai and exhaust are pointless without a tune on LT4.

No need for a tune with most CAI's or an exhaust which retains its stock manifolds and/or primary cats.

Pointless? You can pick up a couple HP with both but really I am looking for more SC whine and a deeper exhaust tone with the S Type Borla. And hoping the rear cat removal helps with heat buildup at least a little. Since these parts really do not improve the air flow that much a tune by itself would pick up the same HP (about 8-10 rw?). Just my guess. Even less on an SS.

If you want a deeper more throaty exhaust note I highly recommend the Stainless Works 3" catback! No rasp at all like some of the other systems out there.

Nice mod path, I'm doing something similar. Been getting some miles on 325/30/19 r888r's and they dead hook at stock hp levels. I did the firestone Indy 500 fronts in the same size, they have pretty aggressive tread pattern, and are sized more like a tall 305. Got caught in the rain yesterday and all was fine with normal driving.

Good to know. 325s woah! No rubbing? What wheels are you running? Pics?

Still have your LS1 Camaro? My black '98 SS M6 was the longest I ever kept a car. I put 90K on it before trading it on a SUV to pull my boat. Bad move.

Yup still have it, it's my baby. Fun little turbo 6 spd car.

No rubbing anywhere, I'm running OEM z28 wheels.

Mcmillion,
Any shots from the rear? Would like to see how wide those are.

I’m either going with 315/30/20 or 325/30/20 if they will fit. Wider I’m sure looks amazing.

I have their 2" headers/catless mid-pipe and 3" axle-back. The sound is amazing. Stealth mode still keeps it reasonably quiet too best of both worlds.
