Magnetic drain plugs beneficial?

Oil, trans, diff part numbers? Worthwhile or no?

Can't hurt, I have a Gold plug in the oil pan and a FilterMag magnet on the oil filter. Diff already has magnets. They are expensive and not proven to actually have saved a engine from catastrophic damage.

I imagine it's really beneficial during a break in period, but definitely won't hurt as the motor ages either

So which brand or where do you get them from?

Beneficial? Why not use one. Do you really want all that crap it catches circulating through your engine possibly stopping something up?

Although I can't say how much metal my magnetic oil drain plug has caught. It just seems like a good idea. I may also purchase a magnetic band to fit over the oil filter - it would catch metal at a different point in the system. After reviewing alternatives, I chose to purchase a magnetic oil pan plug from Dimple. I believe they are in Florida and I believe the owner's name may be Richard Joudoin or something like that. Made in the USA. I believe the size is M12x1.75x21, though you should confirm.

A different or additional approach would be to get your used oil analyzed at every oil change. ...that way you can quantify the metal in the system over time, but that doesn't help reduce the problem, just track it. (Of course, it may help you identify needed repairs before the engine goes completely kaput if it is chewing a lot of metal.)

Hope that helps!
