Question regarding Octane fuel for LFX

I live in California and she came with a full tank of 87 from a Shell Gas station next to the dealership.

I've toyed with full tanks of 87 and 91 and felt a minor difference it seems.

Am I crazy here?

Does the LFX adjust for the higher octane? I've ridden it to low fuel light and filled her up twice with 87 and then done it with 91.

Any of you V6 Veterans want to set me straight on this? Cannot really find much info on the web (one half says it makes a difference, the other half saying its a waste of money).

The LFX does asjust to different octane. I personally use mid grade. 89 octane. The manual says to use 87 or better.

Thats good to hear. Is there any particular difference between top tier gas stations other than detergents?

Say Shell/76/Chevron/Arco?

Don't let your gas gauge get below 1/4 tank. The fuel pump is cooled by sitting in gasoline; and if the tank level gets too low it will overheat and die, and you get to buy a new one.

I use 87, and it works fine. If I wanted to waste money on higher octane I would have bought the v8. Detergent is worthless in direct injection engines; so get the cheapest gas that works for you.

I use the higher octane if I know I will burn it out in 1 go, like freeway. If I am going to do a lot of stop and go in town, or idle at lights, then its 87...

It seems to go farther if you stay at speed on 1 tank..

I tried 91 octane and I never seen any difference. The station I fill at even dropped from 89 to 87 and I haven't seen any change. The 91 octane fuel here is about $.75 or more a gallon so I couldn't see paying the extra money for it just to get what may only be a psychological difference. JMO.

I've always used 91 from day one and never had any issues or problems.

Well I've gone and started a mess here. The premium is only 20 cents more than the regular here in California.

You guys are saying, with the same driving, I will not see an minor increase in mpg?

I have always used 93 octane from day one like others, I believe if you are going to throw performance mods on the vehicle and run the vehicle hard, it is better to have the higher octane.

Being that the engine pulls significant timing on low octane, you can view it as bring designed for higher octane. Particularly due to the high compression. (Direct injection works to prevent detonation, to justify the other side of the argument).

Personally I only use 93. I hate the feel of having 87 in my car, its definitely a little mellower in the high end, and fuel mileage.

I too have used both, no difference noticed with performance. I wouldn't use any cheap gas in my car. Even my mechanic suggests only top tier gas, 87 for our LT's.

In my opinion always use top tier gas station. I have noticed huge differences in every car I have owned.

My opinion only I have chevron as my first choice then shell and 76.(I try to always use chevron) I have heard way to many horror stories from my dad, when people would bring cars into his dealership that have used junk gas.....what does 5-10 cents a gallon really save you. Two bucks.......my two cents.

Thats good to hear, getting my Chevron gas card soon anyway, tired of lugging around a bunch of cash to pay up every 2 weeks.

Arco gas apparently isnt top tier, and I have noticed I am burning through its 91 slightly faster than the Chevron or 76 I mostly use (base this off of three full tanks and my mpg computer readings).

I put 87 gas one time and it got me 16 mpg's. I always get 18 mpg's with 89 octane. When I put 91 I get 19-20 mpg's. Like you said it's only 20 cents more so why not. Oh and I only use chevron or shell.
