Summer 6L80 Trans temp
Hey guys I need some opinions. I live in AZ and the temps get pretty hot here my car runs a little above 180 during stop and go traffic and can get even hotter with sprinted driving. Is this a ok operating temp? I’ve searched extensively through the forum and most everyone says,” mine never gets over 180.” So any help is appreciated.

That's usually where mine hangs. It'll get up to a little over 200 F when I'm doing some spirited driving. This is up in North Dakota during 70 - 80 F weather. Haven't had a chance to check it during out -30 F winters yet.

Shouldn’t it essentially be around the same temp as the coolant?

Also, yes. They should be around the same temperature. But it's nothing to freak out about if they're somewhat different.

Ok! I really appreciate it. I thought it was too high and I was hurting my transmission daily. So I figured i post about it. I did buy an external trans cooler recently but Haven’t had time to install it.

Thank you! I appreciate the insight. Hopefully down the road this thread answers someone else’s question.

In Texas I ran a 40k TruCool trans cooler and it usually stays around 180 mark. I run 4000 stall

Yeah, if you're concerned about it at all, grab a transmission cooler. It'll give you peace of mind.

I'm running cam, heads, 3600 stall and have a large AT cooler that keeps temps <180F most of the time. Slow speed mountain driving, no stop and go where I live, will bring temps up a bit, but "regular" driving keeps temps in check with the cooler.

X-2 mine maintains 180 even in ambient temperatures as high as 125+ degrees.

OP mine runs there more often than not. I too heard the "my trans never goes over 180" speak on here. I got paranoid and added a cooler at my dealer even though they said my temps were fine and it still runs the same temps in traffic. It cools faster afterward when moving which is better I think.
But here is what I figured out with my car. I rarely use the AC so my coolant gets up to about 105C or 221F then the car cools down to around 95C once the thermostat opens. And then back up it goes cycling in temperature. So the trans cooler in the radiator is being heated by the coolant.... If I run the AC my coolant never goes over 93C or about 200F and my trans stays at about 180 pegged. Now it could be the fans blowing over my trans cooler but I doubt its that. So maybe try what I'm saying to see if yours behaves similar. I think the cooling system is set up to run better with the AC on overall. |
