Overdrive Alternator Pulley

Hey guys,

Does anyone know where I can pick up an overdrive pulley for my alternator? I currently run an SLP Performance 25% Underdrive Pulley/Harmonic Balancer that was installed back in 2014. It's mostly fine but I need to pick up some extra charging on the low end/idle.

I've been doing some research online and it seems these things are gems to find. Any insight on where to look is greatly appreciated.

Call SLP and tell them your problem and they will tell you the pully needed.

I have one I have never used, and I don't use it because My idle is 950 because I am built. I got it just in case for some day from a rebuilder I know...… its just not needed.....And frankly heard things about the SLP underdrives...and not that they are harmonic balancer but more like stock and prone to stock problems... as in way old posts of them falling apart like stock.... I never figured squat for producing any power gain from my balancer it was for balance from a radical cam. My good starter took care of header heat stroke problem.

The pulley is fine. No problems with it. But my battery voltage drops at idle. I just have no idea where to pick up one that could over drive the alternator only. I'll try calling slp.

Like I said the over drive for the alternator would simply be a different sized pulley for the alternator most likely available from a local rebuilder of alternators which would just turn the alternator a little faster with a smaller pulley...…. But you may need more than that sounds like your in need of a battery more to me..... and yes it does drop at idle the output of the system...…. turning lights on should increase the output BTW....

12.3v - 12.5v is normal when the battery gets fully charged. The ECU control's the actual output of the alternator.

Question - I'm looking at a high output alternator and the seller (apex) is telling me it comes with a overdriven (standard type) pulley. Our cars use the decoupler type (the ones that spin freely when the engine decelerates), but this one is not.

Would that be a problem? Does anyone know?

This makes me curious. If the ECU controls this, then what is the point of a high output alternator?

The point would be to blast max power when using a stereo and the pull is there making it put out more...….

Has anyone installed an alternator with a pulley that is not the decoupler type? Looking at one option from apex. Its over driven and not the decoupler type. My other alternative is powerbastards, a nut less power but uses stock decoupler pulley. Price is the same on both

Do you actually have a problem with killing the battery, or do you just have concerns because the voltage is lower than you expect. Like these guys said, the ECU controls the alternator, and it definitely does not run all the time. I have had a 25% underdrive for the past two years, and I have no problems with it. I idle the car in the staging lanes at the track, fans running on high, starting it, shutting it off, basically doing all sorts of battery killing stuff - the original battery from 2011 still is going strong. Just wondering if you've actual got an issue, or just looking ahead to what you think might become a future issue.

Well, since nobody has actually answered your question......

No, it will not harm anything by switching to a standard pulley. Millions of cars run them EVERY day.
