K&N Air Filter
Has anyone had issues with the Airfilter from K&N? For some reason my stock airfilter when in allowed me to average 27mpg yet when i put this K&N Airfilter in i dropped to 21mpg.
My driving pattern has not changed.. my gas octaine has changed... does anyone have any ideas or have this issue? Id like to fix it besides replacing the airfilter to stock. It just doesnt seam right. Any IDEAS |

I gained 2 mpg when I installed the K&N Air Filter back 3 months ago and now that I drive in "S" mode consistently I'm in the 23-24 mpg range for my 60 mile roundtrip daily commute (70% secondary roads, 30% highway). I did run 89 octane for a while but saw no benefit then switched back to 87 with no issues.
When was your last oil change ? Was it around the same time you changed to the K&N?

I installed a Airaid intake and filter and noticed my mpgs got worse. What can you do to clean or remove the filter's oil that has already hit the mass sensor and fix the problem? The intake was a heafty investment for me and I want to get all it's benifits.
Thanks. |

There is no reason to clean the MAF sensor. The Airaid Premium Filter is designed with 4 layers of cotton gauze and incorporates a 5th layer of Synthetic material on the inside that WILL NOT ALLOW ANY OIL TO PENETRATE THROUGH THE FILTER. Do not listen to the dealer when they tell you there is filter "oil" on the MAF sensor, when using a Airaid Premium Filter. If the dealer insists, ask them to "TEST" the MAF sensor! Gains or loses in MPG are all dependant on driving styles and driving conditions. A less restrictive air filter does not reduce MPG. Thanks, David |

You might try resetting your ECM to relearn your AFR. You can try pulling your #5 and #20 fuses before you turn in at night then reinstall them in the morning. The other option is to just let the engine relearn on its own. It does that when the mass air flow sensor climbs or adjusts to different altitudes, low desert to high mountains, etc.

Colder temps will affect your mpgs too.

You might check your tire pressure. When the temps drop it causes the air in your tires to contract. Lower psi causes lower mpgs. You prolly already know this, just thought I'd mention it just in case you didn't. Btw, I have a 1lt with a k&n filter, no probs with the gas mileage.

Another thing that really effects gas mileage this time of year is that most
cities require that the gas be oxygenated from Oct. or Nov. to Apr or May. So they put around 10 percent ethanol in the gas. Look at the pump and you'll probably see a sticker that the fuel is oxygenated. There is less energy in a gallon of this fuel, so gas mileage drops accordingly. The price should drop also, but it never does. My mileage dropped about 3 mpg's on my SS when they did this in the Denver area. In the spring you'll see it go back up. Hope this helps you.
