by the way, I applaud the OP for saying what he did. It is by doing this that he was able to see a bigger picture through forum discussion.

That's one thing that some people who participate on forums need to learn: there is nothing wrong with saying ANYTHING on a forum, so long as it is respectful to other forum participants. The only way to learn whether you're wrong or right is to discuss it and have one's viewpoint either validated or refuted.

I think too many people make a big deal about simply being "right" and see a forum as their avenue for indoctrinating everyone with their viewpoint. The OP on the other hand shows his maturity through his open-mindedness and by showing that he is discussing to learn, not discussing to force his opinion onto others.

Don't worry about the price.

Your parents are doing a great job with you and though you may not see it right now, you will understand it when you are older and much wiser. My parents didn't buy me a car, if I wanted one, I had to pay for it, which I did but I learned early on that if you buy it for yourself, you will respect it more and take better care of it. If you go through life expecting "handouts" you will always get disappointed but if you earn it for yourself not only will you get what you want, you will grow up to be someone who not only respects yourself but others as well. Enjoy your car and thank your parents for it because they really didn't HAVE to buy it for you, they did it because they are prowd of you any thought you desirved it for your great grades and other things that you do. Remember this little saying: IT'S NOT ABOUT HAVING WHAT YOU WANT, IT'S ABOUT WANT WHAT YOU HAVE!

Your Parents are doing you a big favor by keeping you humble instead of spoiling you. I think they want you to grow up to appreciate the value of a dollar and not expect the world to hand you the keys to a 35K Camaro SS on a silver platter because you are a nice guy who works hard in school.

My Parents bought me a 3 year old Camaro with 42K miles on it when I was in high school, but i had to pay for gas, maint, and insurance.... truth be told I would have been thankful for any car. I know I was really lucky cause I had friends end up with beat up Olds Cutlass Supremes, Ford Escorts, Chevy Chevettes, etc. Some ended up with brand new Chevy Cavaliers, a brand new Mustang GT, etc. I don't ever recall being anything but thankful to my parents cause they didn't have to buy me a car but they did anyways.

You are mad at your folks for getting you a car because it's not a good enough car? Your right...it does sound like you are a snob because you are...sorry, but the truth sometimes hurts.

My parents had money, but my first car was a 3-speed Datsun that was older than I was and had been sitting in a barn for most of my life.

Honestly, that's the best thing your parents could do for you is to teach you to earn what you want. My parents did the same thing for me growing up. I got an allowance, and I worked to make extra money for what I wanted.

Short of Christmas, I have worked for and bought everything I own. By age 22, I bought and paid for 2 cars (that includes everything: insurance, gas, maintenance, mods), and I bought my own house. My parents gave me guidance, advice, and an understanding that if I want something, I need to do the work to "earn" it. Now, at 23, I have a career that allows me to continue to do what I want, although I'm having to step it up a bit as I'm itching for a 5th gen like crazy.

If you don't work for what you want, you will never understand the value of money, or the value of working for it.

I was in the same boat. I started working in 8th grade, bought myself a Suzuki Sidekick, and treated it like it was gold. People need to work for and earn what they get.

I was in the same boat as the OP. My dad made/ makes good money, but I had worked for everything I had starting out w/ mowing lawns and detaselling corn. I had $4k saved up by the time I was 16. Bought my first car straight out w/ cash. Then worked to pay my pager (this was before every1 could afford a cell phone), insurance, and gas (I was pissed when gas broke $1/gallon).

But yeah If you have the mind set you that you have to work for everything you have, you will be good through out life. If you are used to being handed everything, once the well runs dry you'll be screwed.

Good on your parents for teaching you responsibility!

in a 8 years when my oldest son is around 14yrs old I want to start building a car w/ him. This way he will really appreciate what he has.

This is the only way I'd help my kid with a car. Gotta teach em young to like muscle!

Otherwise... start mowing lawns! Actually... you're mowing the damn lawn either way!

Maybe he's a loser BECAUSE his parent give him everything.

I got good grades played 4 years varsity football and lacrosse and worked a little in the off season.
I drove a 83 Buick... but damn did I love that car

Truth.

It means more if you work for it instead of being handed everything from mommy and daddy.

Way back in 1997 I started out driving a 1982 S-10 pickup and was happy to have it. No interior with rusted out "Flintstone" floorboard and all. After I worked my ass off for 2 years my parents were kind enough to match what I put up so I could get a '94 V6 Camaro for $6k. A $6 k car that I drove for 7 years and put 100k miles on it.

Quit your bitchin about not having sh*t handed to you. There are some of us with college degrees and jobs that still can't get the car we want. Be happy you have a car at all with food in your stomach and clothes on your back.

I'm an engineer and my wife is a doctor. Once we have kids and they get to driving age, you can be damn sure they're not getting a brand new car handed to them on their 16th birthday. If they want nice things, they can work for them just like I did....

When you work for and have to pay for your own car you learn to appreciate it and take better care of it. Anything worth having in life is worth working for. That was instilled upon me at an early age, now I'm trying to instill that on my kids. So far it's been a challenge.
