Questions about Z/28

Hey guys,

Just a couple questions if you don't mind.

I was under the impression that the Z/28 would more than likely be a one year run, and is not only an engineering exercise for GM, but also a way to use up a surplus of LS7's, and that that engine is no longer being produced.

Can anyone shed some light on that for me? thanks.

Not using up left over LS7's. Actually are going to keep building engines in Wixom, MI for this car. Even after they moved the Performance Engine Division to BG, KY.

Welcome back, ArmbarKing, where've you been?! Over 4 years since your last post...

According to Mark Reuss, all Camaro LS7 engines are/were assembled in Wixom, on an apparently LS7-only extended build. Is Wixom PBC still open? If not, then all the LS7s are now built...and the Z/28's potential build numbers are now known, internally.

How long? "Chev" has stated previously, repeatedly, the car will see SOP in "March", with deliveries starting about April 1st (no fooling!). We also know/surmise the Gen-6 Camaro will see SOP "summer (by 9/21) '15". That would leave about 16-18 months of actual Gen-5 Z/28 production, spread over 2 Model Years ('14-'15).

if the 6thgen comes out for the 2016 model year, and the Z/28 isn't debuting until next spring, then it won't be much more than a one year run.

I'm 99% sure that the Z/28 LS7s are going to be built at the new performance engine line in Kentucky. That plant starts up within a month or so of when the Z/28 goes into production. I've also read that GM is looking for a few thousand Z/28 sales per year, and it would seem very strange for them to have stockpiled thousands of V8 engines. They adhere to a policy of 'just in time' production, which means that most major components sit around for a matter of hours, not months, before getting installed in the car.

They kept a skeleton crew at Wixom.

They wouldn't build a car just to use up excess engines. For starters, it would have ben easier to just continue using them in Z06s until they were gone rather then engineering a new car for it and two, they could have just been sold as crate engines through GM parts.

If the LS7s are still going to be assembled in Wixom, just exactly what are they going to be assembling in Bowling Green? With the C7 in production now, the ZR1 is history. so I assume that they are not going be assembling any LS9s. LSAs are assembled in Mexico. The new LT1s are assembled in Tonawanda. With the C6 gone, I'd assume that there'll be no more dry-sump LS3s. That just leaves 69 COPO engines a year and some crate engines. I'm sure that eventually they'll be doing a hypo version of the LT1 for the C7, but I figured that these Z/28 LS7s was going to be the thing that carried them over until the new engines were ready for production.

I believe that the Performance Build Centre also does most, if not all, of GM's crate engines
