What he said, especially if you are still under warranty.
If you are going in there in anyway, it is something definitely to consider. In my previous cars, I always changed the water pump when doing the timing belt.

If you're not doing cam work then I wouldn't worry about it honestly man. I mean think of how many camaros are fine as opposed to those who fail? You're probably safe

When I talked to PCM of NC, I asked about what oil pump failures they had seen and they said they've only seen failures on cammed cars without the high flow oil pump upgrade

Which also reflects my experience with the LS engines. I have been a GM tech for over 10 years now, haven't changed a single pump. I've changed quite a few AFM cams though.

I'm assuming theyy are talking very radical cams and raising your redline to over 7k RPM maybe. Changing the cam itself isn't going to have any effect on the oil pump or oil pressure required. General rule is you need 10psi/1k RPM

The problem with the stock oil pump failure is the pressure regulator sticks wide open at start up. At start up the pump pushes the regulator valve in the pump wide open EVERY TIME and it reacts against the spring pushing back. Well if any dirt or tiny piece of flashing etc is in the oil OR if the bore of the valve is scored undersized etc the valve will stick in the bore in the wide open position causing a no oil pressure condition. Could happen to ANY engine that uses this type oil pump.

Thats why you see this usually at start up cold or hot.

Ha! I'm a computer science graduate, so I'm with you man. Math errors bug the fool out of me.

Also, thanks for the explanation, Barb. I'm new to the Camaro community and don't know squadoosh about oil pump failures on camaros.

Keeping your oil clean will go a long way in preventing many engine failures
including the oil pump. I've done 16 oil changes in 60,000 miles and 10 years
on my early '10 SS L99. Never a bad noise or problem.

What's your problem? More relative today than it was 3 years ago. Different members,
Higher mileage Camaros, etc. Beats talking about how to remove bugs from your front facia.

Well, what is a melling oil pump. its a stock pump painted and a stronger spring.

you dont need to swap, if you want a free upgrade just shim a head bolt and throw it on the spring. it compresses it and increases the oil pressure.
