Manual shifting rpms
What is the general consensus for manual shifting rpms? At what point do you shift to the next highest gear and what is your optimal rpm range for the current gear you are in?
Example: I usually shift to the next highest gear at about 3000 -3200 rpm and I usually stay about 2500 - 2800 for my current gear rpm. Cheers K |

I keep my current gear under 2k usually, and shift around 2500 unless I'm getting on it.

Would like more consensus on this please. Also think any damage may have been done having done it my way?

I always shift above 23-25k just so I don't get the 1st to 4th skip shift.

I shift under "normal" driving at around 2800-3200 rpms. That usually allows for a smooth transition between gears and highway driving I try to keep the rpms under 2200 (gas saving mode).

My normal city driving shifts are around 3000 rpms. When cruising, I try to keep it at or under 2000 rpms.

2500-3000 rpm under normal driving.
I've been told that if you're doing the quarter mile by someone else who posted a very fast (under 13 second) time that he shifted in the 6000 range. When I start doing bracket racing, I'll be testing out different shift points to see what works best.

My shift points for my stock camaro are like this:
into 2nd: 10-12 into 3rd: 17 into 4th: 25 into 5th: 30 into 6th: 45 This will keep the engine at 1000 rpm and anything below that I feel lugs the engine too much. Shifting at these points has gotten me 25 mpg. |

For MPG purposes I should short shift but I hate the 1-4 shift thing so I always shift from 1 to 2 above 2000 rpm. I usually upshift at arout 3000-3500 occasionally 4000 as that is when this engine starts to really show its grunt. Crusing I shoot for 1500 - 2000 rpm - feels natural and comfortable at that range

From my experience in the past, I really never looked at the TACH to figure out when to shift. I just did it on memory or based on the sound of the engine. It's been 10+ years since I drove a stick, so, it will take a little bit to get back into the habit of shifting.

i have a question kinda related but i dont want to make a whole nother thread just for this.
whats this thing called 'rpm matching' lets say im in first gear and i go up to 6000, when im shifting up what should the engine be in when i engage the next gear?? i think if the rpms are matched perfectly to the speed of the driveshaft then the shift would be smoothest |
