Comparing automatic dyno numbers and manual dyno numbers don't give you the full story. In my experience an automatic with the same rwhp as a manual will win a drag race everytime.

I've owned both manual and automatics (LT1 z28s, LS1 z28s, 05 GTO, 06 GTO) and from my experience it doesn't take nearly as much rwhp in an automatic to run the same times as the manual.

My 06 A4 GTO (lightly modded) dynoed 336 rwhp, 347 lb ft. It ran 12.9 @ 111mph at the track

My 05 M6 GTO (lightly modded) dynoed 358 rwhp, 354 lb ft. It ran
13.5 @ 107 mph.

These cars were dynoed on the same dyno. My A4 GTO ran consistantly faster track times with less rwhp.

But that's been the case with all my cars. Given similar rwhp numbers, my automatic cars have alway been faster down the track than my manual cars.

I'm no engineer and really can't explain it. But the automatics can get down the track just as fast or faster with lower rwhp numbers.

The torque converter is responsible for this. A typical torque converter multiplies the engine torque by about 2x at stall speed. The torque converter is a viscous coupling, and when you first leave the line, it takes the higher engine speed (relative to the output of the torque converter) and multiplies the power, but outputs a lower speed. As the engine speed and torque converter speed get closer to each other, this multiplication dimishes, and there is less and less torque multiplication. The tradeoff is efficiency, as a torque converter wastes some energy in the process. Dyno numbers are typically straight pulls in 4th gear, they don't really show you what the automatic trans is doing for you when launching at the track. This is why an automatic car seemingly does more with less.

Torque converter was a lock that sync to 1:1 at 2 or 3 mph on modern cars ......like camaro.
