Track day insurance?

I have done many track days but never bought insurance.

Early on I ran a second hand FFR Cobra which was a total investment ~20k

Then I ran 2007 Z06 which cost me north of $75k still no insurance I guess I kinda thought it was cover by my street policy or maybe I figured I'd tow it back to the interstate and throw it in a ditch.

Then I stopped with the street cars and was renting a spec Miata (don't laugh they are insane fun)

Told myself track days weren't a good idea to much potential for disaster. Now I find myself with a new Z/28 and there is no way I'm not tracking it.

So insurance seems like a good idea...

Every time I'm been at a track day some boob spins out in front of me and I think wow I could have t-bone that moron. Never happens because I'm pretty careful but we have all seen the video of the guys in line at pocono getting wiped out by the Evo if I remember right.

Who is using insurance and what is a good company?

Let's face it.....some day that boob spinning across the track will be me.

I believe it's a grey area if you had an instructor in the car and there was no timing going on I think you could say it was a (HPDE) drivers school, But no instructor and add timing and your chances go down. And for those that think the will just drag it out to the street and call remember ON STAR SEE'S ALL, KNOWS ALL.. I saw a BMW hit the wall a couple of years ago and before he could make it bake to the pits EMS and the police were waiting for him because the car had notified BMW's system.

Yep and insurance fraud isn't how I roll!

That said I'll read the fine print in my policy before buy track day coverage but I feel very cofident they have it excluded. They would be idoits not to.

I not calling my agent because I've heard of people being dropped mysterious after making that inquiry.

I was i the insurance claims business for many years. I guess that's why
I always wondered that most guys don't realize that they most likely are
self insured when on the track.

Quote for 40 year old driver with clean drivers record. Not Modified. Intermediate Run Group at Thompson was..

Katz $391.00
Lockton $404.00

I used 65k replacement value probably should rerun the quote at 70k always forget about pesky sales tax..either way certainly not choosing between them based on price.

Has anyone had to make a claim to either company. You never know how good your insurance is until you actually make a claim.

I have heard with Lockton if you are a member of PCA, BMW CCA, Audi there might be an additional 10% discount you could join CT Valley BMW. Instructors driving your car all 100% covered too I believe.

+2 for Lockton.

I'm still a PCA member and I have let instructor drive my cars on occasion so that's cool.

There is also a 10% or 15% deductible on the policy

Consider this, if you wreck and injure someone else while on the track, you have no liability coverage to protect you, as this track insurance usually just covers your car, nothing else. And if timing is involved, track insurance will not cover you for events like Optima's Search for the Ultimate Street Car.
