No. Kennedy Space Center is still running and Space Shuttle Atlantis is still on public display.

However, KSCVC has suspended it's tours of the Kennedy Space Center until the shut down is over.

I read that 98% of NASA is furloughed until they figure all of this out.

Yeah a good amount of them are gone. They next Mars mission is in jeopardy.

Luckily, not an ounce of tax dollars go into KSCVC.

Since Gravity entered theatres today, I figured I'd say a fun fact about Gravity.

In Gravity, the Space Shuttle's name is Space Shuttle Explorer. Therefor, it's not named after a space-worthy Shuttle. But was the director always wanting to name his shuttle 'Explorer'?

The answer to that question would be no.

In Gravity's soundtrack, every song is named after the spacecraft it was showing when the song was playing. For example, one is named "I.S.S." while another is named "Soyuz".

But what is the song called that plays while Space Shuttle Explorer is shown? Not Explorer, but rather "Atlantis".

Space Shuttle Atlantis was the final shuttle to fly during mission STS-135.

A couple days ago, Space Shuttle Endeavour's hatch was opened at the California Science Center. This is the first time its been opened in a year. Over the next 8 months, the California Science Center will be researching on how to put it's SpaceHAB module into Endeavour's payload bay. While staff were in Endeavour, they were seeing where they could attach SpaceHAB to in Endeavour's payload bay. This will require the payload bay doors to be opened, which is a very hard task to do when not in an Orbiter Processing Facility at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

This is work being done for Endeavour's permanent home, which currently has an opening date of 2018. Endeavour will be lifted vertically and attached to a mock ET and twin SRBs with the one payload bay door opened to allow guests to view the SPaceHAB module inside.
