Speedometer

Hey all!

I just finished fixing a faulty TPMS sensor for the passenger rear wheel. I was excited to have the car all fixed and ready to go. Then, I noticed that the analog speedometer has stopped working. The digital speedometer in the middle and the tachometer still work just fine. Cruise control also works. No CEL.

Any ideas on what the fix would be? I would like to avoid replacing the entire instrument cluster. Is there some type of reset procedure, or something that I would need to take a look at on the circuit board of the instrument cluster?

My first guess would be the stepper motor that drives the needle. Used to be a common problem on some GMs. Replacing will require some soldering if you can source the correct stepper motor.

A dealer can check the function with a Tech2 but it’s the only thing I have found so far that my tech2 clone doesn't have. It may be available on some of the other high end diagnostic tools.

Sounds like you need a cluster, but before you do that try this.....disconnect the neg battery cable and hold it to the positive cable for about 5 seconds. That's called a "Global Reset". Sometimes controllers get locked up and doing that reset will sometimes make them function again.

If not, and you do need a cluster they are available on a exchange basis and they're not too expensive. A new cluster will also need to be programmed by your dealer.
