Collectors Edition as an investment

Its funny for me to see the rush to buy the last of the last or the collectors
edition Camaro. Back in 2002 I saw the same thing with the last of the transams. The 2002 "collectors edition" which sold for over $40K believe it or not. I know, I bought one. The rush was on to get one. People were dropping their new 2001's to get one. So here is one today on ebay with only 5000 miles on it. Hardly driven over 21 years. Its up to $25K so he has another $15k to go to break even. Makes you wonder what you could have done with $40k 21 years ago.

By the way, I still have mine and it has 30 times the mileage but it was fun
driving it over 21 years.

Well times are different from the 60s rush and from the 00s rush and so on..

I remember my great uncle (seriously) telling me about a horse carriage he scored in the 50s... not being silly, being serious. They fizzled also.

It is a rush, then a push then a fizzle.

Just enjoy it.

It would be a terrible investment. There's much better ways to make money.

Not a fizzle for me because i still own and drive the car
But looking back at it i should have put the money
In my matching 401k plan. I still work at the same company
After 30 years and it would have really paid out.

Not much more, if at all. Those never really caught on, the 99 30th is probably worth more like for like.

I'd agree, the 99 anniversary edition is probably THE 4th gen to own. That being said, I don't see the panther edition on the same level. It's just a paint scheme...just like the '02 ws6 collectors edition.

You want an investment, id say either a COPO or maybe an exorcist.

If you had done this instead with your $40,000 you would have about $25,000,000 today.

Collector Car Investment

My time in cars since the eighties (serious expenditures) has taught me NOT to buy new cars that could be collectibles. It will take too much time to break even dollar wise (20+ years). Not to mention what money could have been made if invested other ways.

My purchases have occurred after others took the depreciation hit and tired of hoping to make money. Usually around 10 years old you can find nice low mileage examples. You have to deal with minor issues that surfaced in that time. You can use the money you saved.

If an almost perfect car is of value, buy new. If you sell it in less than 25 years you will take a hit. The one car that has shocked me is the F*** GT. It has more than doubled already.

The only asterisk for this investment idea might be that it is for sure the last of ICE.

If that has any significance, time will tell....Far be it from me to take an educated guess.

Camaro is at an all-time ICE performance peak, and it won't be replaced....ever.

Great to collect for the love and hobby of it....Otherwise,...???????.

90503 nailed it with the words collector hobby. So the guy
With the ce ws6 had a hobby of storing a car for 21 years
And took a loss on the purchase. Doesnt sound like fun.
At least i drove the hell out of mine and made mods to it.
Raced alot of mustangs.
Yea knowing about the apple stock i would have dumped
The hobby and turned the $40k into $25mil.
As far as the last ICE, vette is still making them. And it
Was the last ICE in 2002 for the transam.

I am biased but believe the gen 5Z is the most collectable camaro built in the last 50 years. Can't compete with the ZLE for outright speed on a track, but that doesn't always define collectability. If you look at the market on those, they only recentely are starting to ascend, after nearly ten years they are approaching what they sold for new in low mileage top shape. I don't see any of these CE cars commanding a premium down the line, first kid on the block initial sales notwithstanding like all before them. In the case fo the ZL1CE these are going to be nearly six figure msrp cars, so in to C8 territory. If you look back at the gen 5Z, they were 75k and many sat on lot's for over two years, because they released the LT4 Z06 at the same time and everyone figured for a few grand more than the Z/28 they could have the flagship Vette. Time will tell but IMO folks seem to have no problem paying 30-70k over MSRP for a Z06,a camaro has never commanded that kind of premium, even with 350 units they will sell every one at full pop but in ten years?. We will see..

It has seemed to me, primarily from watching Mecum and Barrett-Jackson, that the 5th and 6th Gen performance model Camaros just don't get near the same buzz and interest that the same years of newer Mustang and Challenger performance models get.

First Gen Camaros do very well along with the Mustangs and some Dodges and Plymouths of those years, but the 5th and 6th Gen Camaros just don't sell for very much at all.

I can't see these CE Camaros making a big breakthrough in collectability, either. It's a shame, but that's how I see the market.

IMO, the biggest problem with the CE as an investment is it has nothing "extra" about it other than the paint color. If GM had given it a bump in power or carbon ceramic brakes, it would have made it more attractive. An LT5 would have made its value soar to the moon!!!
