U-Haul Trailering?

Thinking about trailering my camaro back from CamaroFest. Do any of you have any experience with using a U-Haul trailer with a lowered Camaro? What clearance issues are there? How did you overcome them? Thanks.

Depending on the uhaul dealer, they may give you grief that "you'll hurt your car" or "you'll scrape the front of your car off". They wouldn't rent me a trailer for my Camaro when I was moving recently for this reason. However, I've seen plenty of people who have towed their cars with a uhaul trailer with no problems before.

I have towed my camaro from Arizona to chicago. The U-Haul guy said the same thing. I took responsibility and rented it. All you do is grab a 2x4 and throw it under the front wheels when the front spoiler gets close to scraping the ramp, that should give you enough space to drive up on it.

What about when the middle of the car gets to the top of the ramp? Any problems?

Oh, i almost forgot, it was a long time ago. So the 2x4 should only be around 2-3 ft long x 2 pieces of corse. This is a 2 person process, one guy moving the 2x4's and the other pulling on the trailer. Once the front wheels are on the trailer you pull the 2x4's and keep an eye on the mid section. When it gets close you throw the same 2x4's under the rear to clear the mid section. Now thinking back maybe it might be better to use 2x6's since the wheels are so wide. But keep in mind that my camaro was stock height when i did it...

Along with some wood out back, raise the front of the trailer with the trailer jack. This will give the frame more clearance.

Tie downs work best using T or J hooks into the oval frame slots. Those are the same slots the carriers use for transport tie down. Also make sure it is left in neutral if it's a manual. I saw someone once use tie downs around the tires, and left it in gear. It rocked so much during the journey it bent the shift forks in the M6 trans. When unloaded at destination, wouldn't go in any gear.

Do NOT do this.

The coupler needs to be attached to the ball when loading the car.

Do, do this. Leave the trailer attached to your tow vehicle then raise the front of the trailer and the back of your tow vehicle up. Make sure you set the parking break on the tow vehicle.

Wood and a driveway, road or lot that has some slope to it in order to clear. Plus if you looo closely, as others noted, you'll need some wood under the front wheels to clear the bumper

The jack is only designed to hold the weight of the empty trailer.

I wonder what's worse, driving your car to the event, or loading and towing it using a crappy little trailer from U-Haul, with no stone shield and inadequate ramps?

I've done it a thousand times. Heck, I've lifted the back tires of my truck off the ground. It'd be a pretty weak jack that can only handle an unloaded trailer, which some are.

If it's a weak jack, drive the back truck tires up onto some boards.

no one mentioned that the silver Uhaul is 3" wider between the rails than the orange Uhaul so stay clear of the orange one. They might try to push the orange trailer because for some stupid reason the silver is usually only for one way and the orange is for local meaning returning to same location.

Leaving coastal NC in about 2 1/2 hours, heading NW towards Bowling Green KY to pickup a beautiful Ashen Gray 2015 Z28. Have a new aluminum duel axle trailer that will do the trick. Driver's side fender comes off, sort of like the U Haul does. Put four pieces of 2"X6" planks in the bed of the 2017 Chevrolet diesel 3/4 ton truck, just in case. There will be two of us making the trip. Each way to the vehicle is going to be about 14 hours. Will be back Saturday with pictures!
