weird chirp/grind when coming out of first (auto)

first i have an auto V6 so maybe that narrows it down.

occasionally (maybe once every 3-5 times) when the car switches into second I hear a chrip/grinding noise. Im almost positive its a grind of some sort, but cant really identify it. Its only a very brief noise (like a snap of your fingers or something). It always happens during the switching of gears and its only when coming out of first. I have tried to manually get the noise to occur using the push buttons but I havent been able to so far.

does anyone else hear anything similar? is it even something I should be worried about?

bump.

so im bumping this hoping someone else is hearing this.

I took it to the dealer and they were able to replicate the problem (only once) but had no real idea what it was.

When im getting it now is when im doing a very light acceleration just getting over 10-11 MPH and the car switches into 2nd. when the shift happens there is a slight grinding noise. I dont hear it at any of the other gear switches and since its only when the car comes out of first it doesnt happen every often to begin with. I still doesnt do it when I use the paddles which is even more strange. Me and the tech guy at the dealership are pretty much totally confused. he told me if it gets worse to call him

When you went to the dealer & road tested with the tech, did he have an analyzer hooked up to the on-board dignostic conector? This, if used properly would alert him to an existing as well as an intermitent issue. This highly sophisticated system was universally put in place so that today' high tech cars can actually produce a sequence of frames that will alert the tech as to the when & how these weird problems come & go. In this, will be your answer.

they said they hooked it up to the machine that reads the codes out of the car but didnt find anything. I was also told their "best" electrician looked at the car and he couldnt find anything either.

I got more information from the guy that sold me the car (thanks NUCAR ) than the guy at the customer service center. the guy at the service center said "it could be a couple of things, specifically the direct injection engines make a ticking noise when they are running". I didnt want to call the guy an idiot but thats what I was thinking. the only time this noise is heard is when the car shifts gears and its a grind, not a tick, and he said he heard it. at least he said that he would keep an eye on any other issues he might hear of and he said he would keep me updated if he heard anything.

i had the car out today running around doing errands and I heard it a couple of times but no more than usual. always into 2nd gear always very slight and never for longer than brief part of a second.

Try & find out if the tech is placing the analyzer in the freeze frame mode. This feature is designed to pick up problems that would not necessarily trigger a code. You can adjust the equipment to watch individual frames happening at very small parts of a second. The equipment can store these frames & when you go back to the shop you investigate & compare the results of 1-2 shift points to see any difference from one upshift cycle to another. When you run this by the tech, & his face looks vacant, you need to go elsewhere. Good luck with this one-please report back
