Reflash ECM for Speedometer Recal vs Power Train Warranty???

I’m pretty sure I know the answer to this one but gotta ask anyway.

I want to buy some BFG Comp2 A/S for driving in the cold, wet months but they only come in 35 profile. My speedometer would be off 3-4 mph which would really bug me.

If I have the ECM reprogramed to adjust the tire size on my 2018 ZL1 do I risk voiding my power train warranty?

They can do this at the dealership.

I would definately not re-flash the ECU if you are concerned about maintaining your warranty.

But then you would have to have it reprogrammed after the cold months... All that every year. Maybe not worth it?

Why not just run the Pirelli Winter SottoZero 3? They come in the OEM sizes.

Well that is an option for sure but they are over $1,000 more expensive. Yikes!

Hrm... looks like a 305/35R19 is pretty darn close in size to the 305/30R20. It'll take a one-time wheel purchase but that might be a better solution.

Granted; no tire options for this car are cheap by any means. But they are more affordable than say the Z06. Plus, running the same size tires means not having to reflash the ECU and worrying about warranty issues every 6 months. I guess it's what's worth it in your particular case.

I ran those BFGs Comp2/AS on my 12 ZL1 really like them especially for the price you cant beat them. I did not drive in snow but they are like 1/2 the price and did great for daily type driving in colder wet driving conditions.

No they cant, the dealer cant change anything in the calibration at all for tire sizes. GM hasnt allowed this since around 2012 or 2013. All the dealer can do is flash the ECM with the correct calibration that was assigned to that VIN when the car was built.

The only way to correct for tire size is to either use the Hypertech tire size device or have someone change it using HP Tuners or EFILive. Either way that would cost around $200 at a minimum for the tuning credits to be able to do it.

I ran them year-round on my 2011 SS so I could save the RE71Rs for the track and autocross. I had no complaints about running them on the street.

Yeah I have an HP Tuners but would have to buy credits for it. Its just really hard to compromise the power train warranty where Chevrolet will honor it when tracking the car.

$1,000 or no Warranty? Which is more important?

By law they can not void your warranty without proving the tuning caused a failure(magnuson moss), but some dealers may try too and you will end up paying lawyer fees in order to fight it if they choose to deny your warranty claim. It's up to you to decide if a set of cheaper tires is worth all that. #Firstworldproblems

I hate to tell you, when it comes to calibration changes the manufacture most certainly can void or blacklist the powertrain warranty. Audi, VW, Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes do it in the USA all the time.

The MMA does not provide protection when you mess around with the computer calibrations, that was argued years ago by the manufactures when the EPA requested they lock the calibrations down.

The MMA only protects you for when you change out parts on the vehicles that are not OEM, IE you use a Fram oil filter instead of a AC Delco. You use Pennzoil instead of Mobile, you run Continental tires instead of Goodyear. Using a Orielly alternator and the engine blows up, they would have to prove the aftermarket alternator caused the engine to blow up.

You take you Audi into the dealership for an oil change and while it is there the dealership is required by Audi to plug into it and check for any updates, while they do that the Audi mothership checks the computer calibrations. If they show to be modified Audi then flags the car with a "TD1" flag in their system.

At that point they will not warranty the powertrain any further going forward. I have personally seen it done and know people who have cars that have been flagged.

Yea I have heard that too but I have also seen others state that tuning falls under the MMA. I do know there are dealerships out there that are mod friendly. Either way, The point was... is $1000.00 worth potentially voiding a warranty? I would say if the OP is here asking the question he should just buy the correct tires. lol
