My conversation with a Superchips tech (prior to buying one) led me to believe I could apply a tune separately from AFM disable. That's not how it goes, so I see where I can either apply "93 performance" or "performance". Last one says 91 octane minimum.
Since a 40k miles yr daily driver I wanted to float these ideas out there. NOTE: I'm not looking for max performance all the time, primarily AFM disabled. But, will want to run in 91 or 93 octane performance tunes sometimes. Which is my reason for Superchips vs Range AFM disabler. If other handhelds have options for 89/91/93 octane tunes and allow AFM enable/disable separately...let me know. I didn't find any searches that definitely said one way or the other. First I do this: 1. I run a couple tanks of 91 octane without applying any tune. 2. Pull fuses #5 and #20 (few hrs) to let ECM reset and now run with a 91 octane brain. (or do I do this before 2 tanks?) 3. Apply Superchips performance tune with AFM disabled. Or, don't need to do #2 since Superchips will instantly reset? So...now I'm running on 91 octane with the performance tune and AFM disabled. QUESTIONS: 4. If I switch to 89 octane will this damage the engine? 5. If I switch to 89 octane will the computer adjust down to 89 octane (making it run fine) but leave AFM disabled? I realize performance will lessen. 6. Will Superchips performance tune override #5 and not allow adjusting down to 89 octane? Appreciate any insight if you've gone this route. |

You can turn AFM off with the stock tune, you'll burn more fuel... You can do the same with a performance tune but you'll be wasting money on higher octane fuel with no noticeable gains...

Why not just get a street tune and skip the chip or dyno? Probably same amount as the chip but cheaper than a dyno tune if you don't want every last bit of rwhp

Put it back to stock, sell it and get a real tune via HP Tuners, EFI Live or SCT.

AFM disabled with performance tune...this will wipe out performance gains? Or, just wipe out mpg gains?

I got Superchips Flashpaq F5 refurbished (full warranty, 30 day $ back) for $229 so it's hard to swap that for a $500+ street tune or another handheld. My local tune shop starts at $500 then adds dyno time at $275 hr.
Superchips tech said yesterday that I could run performance tune with 89 but I'm leaning towards just 91 octane all time. If I notice any decent mpg/performance gains on 89 or 91 I'll post the results. |

Dude, Craigslist is your friend. You can find a used SCT X3 or X4 for 175 to 250 easy. It's an electronic part. Not really much can go wrong with it. You are much better off that way than with a Hypertech, Superchips or any other cheap tuner of the same sort.
