Have you bleed the brake/clutch system yet? Your seeming to ignore multiple peoples advice. Bleeding the system is your cheapest option at this point so give it a try!

The clutch is not disengaging fully for one of the reasons already stated. Bleeding the hydraulics is step 1 but you may need a new clutch.

There is a brief bit before the cutch pedal actually feels resistive. That is just the pedal system tensioning, not the hydraulic system. That little bit of throw doesn't impact the clutch engagement. If the clutch isn't fully activating it's because of a greater hydraulic problem or an issue with the pressure plate. Old cable clutches that you could take up are not equivocal to hydraulics, there is nothing that stretches or loosens up.

took the carpet mat out gives a little more pedal travel
and is shifting better

Shouldn't need to do that. Try bleeding the clutch.
