I much prefer the 9MM and currently my only handgun is a Smith & Wesson M&P 9MM w/ the 4.25" barrel. With advances in modern ammunition, I do not feel under-gunned with 17 rounds of Federal HST on tap. I have a concealed handgun permit with the State of Louisiana and I am currently prepping for an 8 hour course for my AR15 and an 8 hour handgun course.

If you can, rent some guns at a range. A range local to me has all sorts of firearms available to try. Buy the one you can shoot well. Not the one that is 'cool' or sounds neat.

BTW, 9MM is about $10-12 per 50 rounds. .40 S&W is around $14-17 per 50. .45ACP is $22+. You can get a lot of practice on a 9MM for the money. I don't care how much better 45ACP can hurt someone if you can't hit anyone with it, but you happen to shoot better with the 9MM and keep all shots on target.

Also, try a .357 revolver. A 357 is very easy to work with and when loaded with 38 Special that are WONDERFUL to shoot. Want a wonderful gun? Get a used Smith & Wesson 357 made before 2002. They don't have the ILS lock on them and have amazing triggers.

You need to decided WHY you want a gun, then you need to go to a store and touch everything. Pull the trigger, see how it feels, work all the mechanisms, grip it. Rack the slide. Have someone in person explain all the features and details of the gun. Rent one if you can.

I work for Remington and shoot alot of different guns. Also ammunition isn't a problem lol. I love my new 1911 45 I just got but also had a 9 that was nice. I agree if I have a chance to go shoot different calibers I would do that!

When the gang gets together to shoot, pretty much all pistol calibers are represented, from .22 to .454 Cassull.

The most fun to shoot, by far, is the .454....... Great pistol for blowing up watermelons and hunting feral hog... or grizzly bear LOL... but definitely not a self defense weapon, even in home. It will go thru a burglar... and his buddy... and the wall... AND your neighbors wall.

It only takes 3 or 4" of penetration to mortally wound. A .22 can easily do that, but does very little trauma to the internals. 9mm penetrates and creates a good amount of trauma, with a slight chance of exiting the body. 45acp is low velocity, high energy, creates a LOT of internal trauma and if it exits, (probably) has used a lot of it's energy.

My favorite carry pistol is always the most dependable, no feed failures, jams or fire fail. Right now that's a RI full size 1911 .45... it eats everything! Light or heavy loads, 185 to 230gr bullets, it don't care. Number 2 is a Kimber compact... less dependable, but easier to carry all day.

I had a S&W 39-2 9mm that was stolen. Most dependable gas pistol I've ever owned. I may replace it with a hi-cap variant, if it's as dependable as the 39-2, it goes to number 1 on my carry list.

recently bought vacation property in Kali, gun shop owner gave me a nice deal on the Sig. Kalifornia's 10-day wait period sucks in some ways but I didn't mind the wait.
