They are debuting a new car in NASCAR in 2013. The cars are actually pretty close to thier production counterparts. They are no longer a "common body template".

While they are not exactly like the production versions, they are alot closer than just stickers now. I like it, think they'll be good for the sport, as long as they can make the racing better.

It's a shame Dodge is pulling out of the sport. I think thier 2013 Charger was the best looking of the bunch...

What I am saying is that apart from the appearance there is no commonality between the production cars and NASCAR. If they want to bring back the magic they should go back to homologation standards based on the production cars. Run what you sell. That would make the cars we see in the showroom a lot more interesting and make the money spent on NASCAR not only a marketing expense but an investment in development. We would benefit from the technological trickle down the same way Corvette, Porsche, and Ferrari owners do from those factory racing programs.

I heard a horrible rumor about this. That the SS will be launched with the LS3 for the first model year, followed be an upgrade the following year, either the Direct Injection V8 or something else yet unknown (LSA). GM has done it before with the 2004 to 2005 GTO and the SSR, both released with the LS2 in the first year, followed by the LS3 in the second year.

The LSA is being tested in the the HSV version. Although I would kill to have the LSA in the SS, I strongly doubt it. In Australia it will be a very exclusive car in limited production, similar to the W427, which they only made 200 of.
