GM CAL for 3.91 gears not installed at dealer?

Has anyone had 3.91 gears installed not at the dealer but was able to get the GM calibration done at the dealer?

Thanks
Brian

Up to your dealer really. They get paid for doing the calibration by GM. But some dealers aren't going to be interested in doing it if they didn't do the work.

Mainly because the dealer isn't going to be able to stand behind someone elses work.

That's a good question too, because I just talked with Fremont Chevrolet service about pricing for the 3.91 upgrade and they quoted $1750 for the whole deal, yet Rearend Specialties website in Santa Clara shows they can do a ring and pinion upgrade for about $650 parts and labor.

That means that I would just need someone to reflash some code to fix the speedometer reading ratio change for less than $1100. I'm guessing that's only 1 hour work to flash, including the time it takes to connect the cable, go on the internet and look up the values to flash, and type them into a variable page, and press the Update button.

Am I missing something here, or is so expensive because their guys don't know gears and expect several failures and reworks till they get it right??

Most dealers will charge you MSRP for every part plus a $140 an hour labor rate. I wouldn't want a dealership to touch my car with very few exceptions. Ask what they would charge purely for the update.

When I spoke with the service manager at Stewart Chevrolet in Colma, they were fine with me having the gears installed by another shop because he wasn't confident in having them do it since Stewart Chevrolet didn't get a lot of rear gear work. He did say that I'd have to pay the hour labor for the ECU reprogramming.

650 for parts and labor is a low. The gm kit is 425 for gear kit alone.

I'm guessing the $650 is for regular gears in the older cars. Not 5th gen's.

Per one of my GM contacts they are supposed to release 3.91 gear calibrations that can be done at the dealer but there is no time frame on it.

I think a reasonable way to look at the cost would be

Kit + Labor =

So if the kit is $425, I'd then figure 4-5 hours for labor.
