rear diff question.

here we go, has anyone dropped the center section to change the 3 diff bushings by just pulling the 3 bolts? leaving the axles attached, leaving the drive shaft attached ? I'm thinking there is enough play to do that very thing. only have to drop half diameter of bushing. reds too hard for me. going for a little softer but ,not back to stock. too much harmonics for me I'm a highway star. not so much drag racer. I think there is enough travel to do it. I have the service manuals I will see what they say.wondering if any short cuts could be had. the oldman....

You will likely have trouble getting one of the old bushings out with the diff in place. I attempted to do it this way when I changed diff covers. I think I got one of bushings on the body of the diff changed with it in the car, couldn't see a good way to do the other with it still in and decided to leave the one remaining original . I then realized I couldn't torque the load bolts on the cover with it in the car and dropped the diff anyway. At that point I realized how much easier it would have been to drop the diff completely to start with. My recommendation is to just pull the diff.

Drop the diff, it'll be much easier to remove and install the bushings.

LOL, but yeah drop the diff. The amount of cussing and swearing trying to do it in place wont be worth the amount of time it takes to drop it out

If you are replacing 2 piece bushings with different 2 piece bushings, it is likely doable. I would think that you might have to pull the cover and disconnect the driveshaft to get enough room, but I really don't know.

yup gotta drop...if your careful you can just pull the pass. axle and leave the drive side in...tilt the diff and it drops right out...getting the OEM bushings out can be a b.

Good luck!

Sometimes it's easier to spend the 30 minutes to take it all apart and save the 2 hours of aggravation.

I don't know why you didn't do it when you had the diff out for gears.

I did change from stock to the 2 piece bmr reds. was going to get the lower durameter blacks and put those in to see if that quelled the resonance thru the chassie. my situation is so fluid right now. I all boils down to my rear end set up and how I was rushed out the door after the guy I've known for 13 years did the work, won't answer my calls, won't return my calls etc. he took a side grinder with a cut off wheel cut the pinion bearing off and slotted my old pinion shaft so if I ever wanted to return my LSD with the 3:45 it would be a no go. found some other rear end guys in area that know IRS systems bought dial indicator with mount, for checking back lash, beam type torque wrench for pinion preload, I should have done this myself and saved $600 bucks. it just pisses me off when people you trust do shoddy work and push you out the door them play chicken shit! I'm an electrician if my shits wrong people die. some people have no guts or pride.
