Exclamation BMW switching to turbocharged M cars

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/27/b...harged-m-cars/

Quote:
After two decades of normally-aspirated high-revving engines shoehorned under the hoods of its M cars, BMW is changing direction and will begin to offer direct-injection turbocharged powerplants in its future high-performance flagships.
are others to follow?

I think others will follow, it allows a smaller more efficient engine to produce power that normally was impossible. Plus the turbos from the factory are generally very efficient.

Porsche has gone bi-turbo as well in the new 911

I think there will always be a stigma to turbo engines, and that a lot of people (and manufacturers) will shy away from them based on longevity concerns-especially in high output form. I personally prefer the simplicity and lower overall cost of a NA motor. Then again a turbocharged car has a lot of potential so I can see why people like them.

i think you will find the turbos in more expensive cars, they can afford to put it all together and back it up.

I saw some claims on the BMW boards that 335s produced after the new M3 was released are slower Alegedly because 335's flatter torque curve makes it feel almost as quick as the m3, which might make the M3 feel a little overpriced when you test drive them back to back a cost BMW some revenue.

I'm glad to hear that the long term fix is to make the Ms faster.

Brilliant move on BMW's part. Nothing gets worse with a turbo...but I'm a junkie.

Diesel is more expensive than gas in the US now as well. It didn't used to be, but for the last 3 years or so it has been.

And Mercedes is switching from V12's to V8's. However, Honda is said to be working on a V8.
