2SSRS vert with GFX and heritage grill here. I couldn't have afforded a top of the line Camaro 20 years ago bit I did have a loaded Talon Awd turbo.

American Motors/Mitsubishi? The 3000GTs were better than the Dodge's too. Don't buy a Japanese car branded as a MOPAR. That's like buying an OPEL and calling it a Chevy!

there have been a few here. usually they take the form of someone loosing a job or having some situation occur where they need to save the money every month and have to sell their car. that's part of the reason I went with an LS. the payment is just an afterthought. even if my wife or I lost a job I wouldn't have to get rid of it. |

I don't know if I consider it settling but I bought the V6 just because of financial reasons. Around here a V6 is around $26k to $27k and an SS is $36k minimum and $33k for 2 year old used with 20k miles on them. Since I was mainly going for looks I decided on the V6. Nothing to sneeze at when it is pumping out 323 HP. And yes, the V8 is always on my mind just about every time I get into my car. But being out the extra $10k to have it and 10 to 15 MPG less usually takes those thoughts away. I am totally impressed with the power this little V6 is cranking out. Dean. |

If your concerned about the cost of gas, then you probably can't afford an SS.

These cars are toys (Boat, Bike, ATV, ect) they should be purchased as such if you need transportation there are a lot of better options just my 2cents

My advice would be to buy what you really want, but only when you can afford it.
An SS/ZL1 cost more in ways besides gas. Insurance can cost more, it comes only with expensive summer tires so if it will be your only car you'll need to address that come winter, brakes and oil cost more, and of course gas consumption will be higher and require premium. That said if you really want more and can't afford it now why not wait a little longer and get it the first time? Many have "traded up" because they wanted more than they could afford the first time around. Which is always more costly, but they did get a Camaro sooner. So that's the choice. I would avoid getting to deep. Things change in life and there's nothing worse than seeing a Camaro having to be given up because it became to much for someone.

I think the cost of gas between the v6 and ss is not so much the issue, it could be dependent on what was being driven prior to purchasing a camaro. I had a Mazda 3, gas cost me $40 every 2 weeks, average 500 kms a week. My ss costs me close to $90 every week, sometimes twice a week depending on what's happening with work. That was something I did not factor into my purchase.
When I bought my car, I factored in my payment obviously, which was a bit more than I wanted but not much. I knew I needed winter tires as its my dd, oil changes are more. The thing that also bugs me is money I could have used for mods has gone to pay my deductible for insurance claims. One would have happened regardless of what I was driving (hail), the other vandalism (keyed). I've debated trading either down or out all together. I can afford my car but it certainly puts a large hole in my pocket. I had my best financial years over the last 2, putting an extra $20k in my account annually, not having the same year and that also makes a difference. Then I go for a drive and think about what other vehicle options I'd consider and can't come up with anything. Life happens. |
