TPMS Sensor Issues Under Road Course Conditions

So I've been tracking my Z/28 since I purchased new and noticed that the rear TPMS sensors, especially the left rear, tend to go to no output, display a - instead of a pressure value, and turn on the Service TPMS light and warning message while on track.

Sometimes they come back with a reading within an hour sometimes they don't come back until relearned and at least one won't relearn. (I have three sets of Z/28 wheels with different types of tires)

I initially thought it might have been a bad sensor(s) but when I put a new set of tires on this fall I replaced all four sensors and the new set had the same rear TPMS issue as the previous sensors during my first session out on track with them.

Primarily running at Watkins Glen, which heavily loads and heats the left rear tire. I've also had this same problem at NCMMSP, Mid-Ohio and Mosport. I think it's a heat issue but not sure. I am not overpressurizing the sensor. I go out cold at 26 to 26.5 psi and typically end up at about 34 psi hot.

Anyone else seeing this type of problem with your TPMS when the tires get heavily loaded/used? Any insights on what the cause may be and fixes?

td195f I have a 2013 ZL1 and when I ran into this problem the batteries in the sensors were on their last legs. Replaced the sensors and the problem went away.

Thanks for the response. This last time it happened was with a brand new set of sensors that I got from my local Chevy dealer less than two weeks before so I don't think it is a battery issue.
It's been very annoying as I like to do a quick check at the end of my first lap to see how much pressure has built up before I push the tires hard. If I swap the rears side to side the left rear will go out even though that same tire was fine on the right rear.

The quick answer is no.

With snow on the ground and the car put away for the winter I haven't been able to do anything with this issue.

I do want to look into how the sensors communicate with, I'm guessing here, the Body Control Module and get the signal on the CAN Bus. There has to be an antenna/receiver somewhere in the car to get the signals into the data system in the car. I'm wondering if it's a location thing as it's almost always the left rear and occasionally the right rear, never a front tire. Happens with different sensors so it's not an individual sensor or old battery issue.

Just because you got them from the dealer two weeks prior does not mean they were not sitting on the shelf for years before that. They could still be old inventory especially since I believe the 6th gen uses different sensors than the 5th gen. So 5th gen sensors are probably not made as frequently anymore.

A decent tire shop should be able to test your sensors and get data out of them with their TPMS tool.

Or even swap out and program fresh aftermarket ones (which is easy: they just crush down the side wall and take them in/out, no mounting balancing needed)

its the heat. the C6 guys have terrible problems when they put on slicks. the sensors get hot and stop working properly. you would think that there would be some hi temp sensors sold by someone that wants our money.

Thanks, that was my original thought. Only occurs on the rear and will almost always be the left rear at WGI which is the most heavily loaded rear tire there. If I swap the rear tires, the tire from the right side that had been working will stop once it's on the left side.

going down the rabbit hole of too much heat.........

you could try starting off at 28-28.5 psi cold. the tire will not flex as much and may not get as hot. i would suggest to raise the pressure in all tires so not to upset the balance of the car.
this past weekend i had the left rear tps sensor go out. i was over driving the rear tires by quite a bit. pressures were higher than normal and the tires were hot. i haven't had a chance to reprogram the sensors to see if it comes back or if it is a hard failure.
