Saving Weight

Sorry for the noob posts, guys. Just wondering what some of you guys are doing to shed some pounds off our Camaros. I'm talking about mods and upgrades that save weight, and not necessarily gutting the car. Weight savings for daily drivers, not drag stip.

1. Anyone remove the spare tire? This thing has to be 45lbs of "dead" weight. We got on-star road side assistanc,man! Do we really need to have this dead- weigh in our trunks?

2. My 1LT v6 has the alloy wheels, and I hope that there's some lighter wheels and tire combos out there, not sacrificing strength---preferably in the 20" range. Upgrading to lighter wheels and tire combo could shed another total 40-50 lbs easily (rotational mass lowered improves performance, too).

3. Anyone know how much a CAI kit weighs vs the stock kit? What about upgrading axle-back kit vs the stock exhaust? HOpefully there's some weight savings there, maybe 20lbs? If you got the numbers, please share.

I would say the Dynomax mufflers I installed cut at least 20 lbs off, the stockers are heavy. Driving with 1/2 a tank of gas drops another 70 lbs or so....

Perfect, I was going to order the Dynomax as well. 20lbs saved right there is decent.

What about CAI intake vs the stock one? Maybe another 10lbs there, I hope. Hopefully someone has actually weighed these and can tell us.

Stieger, thx, great link, man!

Truth is I'd like to get to as close as 3600lbs as possible. Why? To match/beat them Mustangs 11.14 hp/weight ratios, lol Co-worker keeps throwing that little stat around, and yes, they have a slight edge there, but I intend to negate it.

After reading the link posted by Stieger, it seems like upgrading to lighter wheels/tire combo can shed 40-50lbs easily even on 20" wheels/tires. But this is expensive! Around $2300 easily on wheels and tires upgrade. Need a cheaper alternative at moment. Looks like the spare tire needs to go, lol and perhaps a lighter battery.

Now at 3800lbs/333hp with CAI = 11.41

So v6 1LT Camaro at 3600lbs/323hp = 11.14

if I add my CAI kit 10hp gain, then 3600/333 = 10.81 (they don't have to know, lol)

If you are intentional about the products you select you can shed a lot of weight as you modify your car. A lot of weight can be saved with exhaust, suspension, and wheel/brake upgrades. The factory seats and battery are pretty heavy and there are very good options that weigh a lot less.

rtcat, thx for the post. Good stuff. Nex mod will be exaust, and I think its going to be a cat-back, MRT 2.0 or the Dynomax VT. THe price of the Dynomax VT's is hard to pass up, and Henry did a nice review and sounds good.

Thx Apex-Chase! Trying to find out how much a 1LT trim 18" alloy wheel weighs. Need to compare those with 20" inch wheels at the Tire Rack to see if i'm actually saving weight.

Also if possible, weight of 1LT tire vs the tires i'm looking to pair with new 20" wheels and see if I'm really saving overall.

Lighter battery should help and its pretty cost effective, any suggestions on batteries?
