you should never shift your automatic manually, even if you are going to have fun by flooring it. Having it in 1st won't change the cars reaction of the line

It got up to 75 by the time it shifted to 3rd gear. Having it in drive it would be at around 65 when it shifts into 3rd.

Depends on your throttle position too.

There's a kid around here with an '01 V6 that drives his auto like a manual constantly. He's gone through 2 engines (on his third) and 2 tranny's (also on his 3rd) Then again, I have NEVER heard him pull out of anywhere without tachin out. He drives with his foot on the floor everywhere he goes.
But still, shiftin 'em manually, isn't good

Oh and Ant, Revo meant the "SGS" button next to your foglight button. It either says "SGS" or ...something about tracion control....I can't remember what the button says

yeah, most of the older 4th gen's I've seen have it spelled out. My 97 has the SGS toggle switch on the dash. Another thing I've often wondered about was the Odometer on these cars... I've seen some 97's with an analog one but mine's digital..... and ideas?

Only 98 and up V6s have the traction control as an option

you won't outshift the auto tranny off the line. You shouldn't be attempting to launch and shift manually with that transmission unless you have a manual valve body. Leave it in [D] and let the computer do the shifting at WOT

very early 97's still had the old style odometer, even then its very rare to see one.

I've always heard that too. I don't know anything about transmissions, but on the 5th gen automatics, isn't that what the tap shift is for? Are there some inner workings that allow this without any adverse reactions?
