Not to hijack the thread, but Ive been wondering whats the rule for switching to synthetic. Ive been told that if you have more that like, 70K miles not to switch. Ive been wanting to switch to royal purple, but I dont know if I can?

I switched to RP in my car at 85,000 miles.

I've actually never heard of a mileage cap for switching.
- Xanthos

P.S. - for those who care:

Switching to Royal Purple of non-synthetic oils netted me a 11.6% improvement in gas mileage. For 3 oil changes before switching my overall average fuel economy was about 31 mpg combined city/highway. After switching with no changes in driving habits/routes I've been averaging 34.5 mpg combined.

And yes, there is a noticable seat of the pants difference in power, as long as you keep the oil clean. I don't have any dyno results but since my car puts probably all of 115-120 horsepower to the wheels, its probably for the best.

There is no requirement to wait before switching to synthetic on modern cars. Engines are broken in at the factory and a lot of cars ship with synthetic oil to the dealership as new.

However, unless you're going for extended drain intervals (1 year or 10,000 miles or more) they're a waste of money.

This hasn't been mentioned but it's important...

If you're using synthetic you can extend your oil change interval, BUT, you still need to change your filter every 2~3,000 miles and top it off.

Not true. A GOOD filter with synthetic media will last a very long time these days. If you're clogging up an oil filter in 2,000 - 3,000 miles your engine has bigger issues than when you change the oil filter. I recommend a Purolator PureOne oil filter as it's ranked above Mobil 1 in efficiency and costs half as much.

My owners manual in 3 different cars says to change the oil filter at 15,000 miles.

there's no rule or cap. I switched over at 150k on my LT1 and havent looked back.

tho I would recommend seafoaming your car before you swap over.

well, it was ranked above it in 1999, but I have no doubts that they are still running strong against the rest of the pack for less.

my recommendation is Wix with PureOne in a close second

It's because AMSoil is a cult, there is no choice involved.

I just use Mobile 1 fully synthatic they say it can hold up until 6000 mile but i change it every 4800 mile because here in kuwait the weather is so hot it can reach 50c dgree it just feel like it is killing the engine so that the oil is so important thing i gusee.

RP is fully synthetic. feel free to switch over. make sure you get a good filter as well, Wix, PurOne (purolator), Mobil1 and K&N are all good oil filters.

good for you on keeping your changes frequent over there.

Its not how many miles you've driven, its how you've driven the miles.
