What is this bar over the engine?

Just bought the 2011 SS/RS; while, this part is not on my car, not even the people at the dealer ship could tell me what it is so I can shop for it. Obviously its something for stability or support or control but they called a "Stater Bar" but I can't find anything on google for it. All info is greatly appreciated!

It's a strut tower brace; lots of performance oriented cars have them.

It's a strut brace and unless you have a convertible...you don't really need it. You would get more bang for your buck elsewhere regarding suspension/chasis modifications.

Sweet! Thanks for the info and advise. But one question though why would only the convertible need it?

body flex without the roof is my guess... STB's are big on front wheel drive cars, but they have been being used on more and more cars like these now. As to their effectiveness on a solid roof car you get 50-50 of people saying yea or nay....

It's a place to put all your trophies for display when you have your hood up at a car show

They are handy for leaning on as well, while your looking over the engine.

Watch the video on this page. It should change your point of view. Hell I could feel it the day I bought the car!

3mm? I guarantee the rest of the car flexes at least that much as well.
Stiffening the chassis you can feel yes but does it make a difference in the actual day to day driving of the car? Do you over-steer less now?
What is the actual difference... not just the fact it felt stiffer... can you really corner better? I'd like to see some real world results of people drifting off a corner and it being corrected from stopping 3mm of flex.
Not saying it doesn't help just want to see real world data on it.
There are so many things involved with the handling of the car. PS fade from hot fluid, tires, shocks.. etc

I think you have lost sight of the "real world".... It is ALL about "feel" out here. Not whether I can shave a tenth off a lap or corner at max G. Spend some time on some shitty roads with uneven surfaces, bad transitions and overall poor surface conditions and you want the car to track and respond as best it can through it all.... I have owned several cars that I have added a STB to. Each and every time it has improved the feel and control of the car. That is all the data I need...
