Leaving something plugged into OBD port long term?
Looking at getting pay-by-mile car insurance.
BUT, I have to have their device plugged into the OBD port full time, 24/7. Anything wrong with having something like this plugged in all the time? I have heard folks mentioning that it is not a good thing. |

i leave my aem afr and the aeroforce gauge plugged in all the time with no issues. Why would you want the insurance company tracking your every move to save a buck specially in a v8 muscle car. The insurance company would triple my policy or just drop me.

we have owned my wifes 2018 honda for about 5 years, paid it off a couple of years ago.when i was vacuuming it out i noticed a little light going on and off under the dash, turned out to be a tracking device that had been in the OBD port for 5 years with no ill effects, but needless to say it is not in there now.as OP above mentioned do you really want big brother watching you all the time?

If it's the deal where they track your acceleration/deceleration, they'd probably raise my rates. I tend to drive briskly. But I pay attention to the traffic and conditions, not my cell phone.

State Farm gave me like a hotspot device to be tethered to my car. I'd say it's the first step to the old Gov. control ready for your carbon footprint tracker.

I think flat rate insurance works best for these cars....just saying
You may think your taking it easy but these things accelerate rapidly and brake rapidly two things these guys use to "adjust" your premiums. My favorite convo with an insurance company went like this. Me: I would like to inquire about your over 55 mature driver insurance at your super low rates. Them: we need a little info what car or cars do you have? Me: A 1999 TA weekend car and a 2010 Camaro SS/RS Them: I am sorry sir we don't insure those types of cars. Me: I thought you insured the driver? Them: those cars don't fit our profile. Me: LOL Ok then and I hung up.

Not going to hurt anything leaving something plugged into the OBD2 port long term.

I ran an aftermarket HUD on my '18 Silverado for four years, until it took a dump a few months ago. Was plugged into the OBD the whole time. No issues.

Nothing wrong with having something plugged in there, like another guy said I have had my Aeroforce and AEM guage hooked up there for awhile now, no issues.

High quality devices don't draw much power, they have something of a sleep mode. Same as stereo equip and such. Cheap crap draws down power 24/7 which you won't notice until your battery runs down after only a week instead of a month.

Yep, all good. Like some of the others here, I have my Aeroforce Dual gauges plugged in all the time. They only power up when you open the door. And as for using that device for you insurance to save money by monitoring your mileage, it will also monitor HOW you drive and report it as well. WOT pulls, quick starts from a stoplight, speeds way over the posted limits etc. So I would be careful on using that. You'd probably have to drive like "grandpa jones" to be safe. lol.

lol that’s one of the worst ideas I’ve seen on here in a while. The last thing I need in my life is my insurance company seeing me do 150+ mph highway run (in Mexico of course) not to mention all the other shenanigans these cars bring out in us
