NOT to start the V6/V8 B.S., but is it just me, or ....

... is the 3.6 in the 5th/6th gen Camaros reminiscent of the 302 that came in the 1st gen cars?

I mean, a smaller engine that revs high & fast and puts out more than a respectable amount of power for its size?

IMO, no. Again, IMO, the LS7 is more reminiscent of the 1st gen Z/28 302 than the V6. Yes it is significantly more cubic inches, but it has a 7k redline designed for racing. I imagine that's why they put it in the "new" Z/28.

Besides, I'm NOT trying to ask "Which is Better, the 3.6 or the 6.2," just curious if anyone else made the comparison between the 3.6 and the 302?

IMO yes it is. Similar power though the mighty 302 was underrated. It was 290 HP but in reality closer to 375 stock or so. It also continued to make power beyond 6200 RPM where the LS3/L99 don't unless they are cammed etc.
So in terms of how the engines make their power I would for sure agree Don. I don't see this as a possible flame fest at all you make a very good point.

well you know the V8 guys are gonna poop all over this thread, but 323 horsepower out of 217 cubic inches with a glass smooth idle and ability to run well on 89 octane is nothing to sneeze at.back in the day anything over 300 honest horsepower was respectable, and dyno runs were conducted with no accessories to drag down the numbers.and it does have the same character as the 302,the higher you twist it,the better it runs.

The Jeff Gordan Pepsi commercial is a pretty good example of what the 6 can do in the right hands.

In all fairness, the LS7 isn't quite what I was referring to as it IS a purpose built, race-inspired/designed engine with-like you said, a much larger displacement. I was wanting to compare a relatively SMALL displacement engine VS the typically larger displacement engines that were/are currently available.

This is the same as I was thinking. In the spirit of the 302, the 3.6 has the same characteristics ... high revving, better output at rpms the "regular engines" couldn't touch. Running on 87 is a bonus. I ADMIT, the 3.6 can't compare the numbers to the modern "regular engines" (especially torque), but in the SPIRIT of things, I feel that it is an incarnation of the 302.

I always thought that the car in the Jeff Gordon commercial was a LS3.

No if I recall right it didn't have the mail slot on the front that would identify it as a SS. Pretty sure it was a V6.

Too, isn't the LS7 supercharged? The 302 was N/A.
