Just another FYI. Converters on SC cars = waste of money

I have the SLP Long Tubes and hi-flow cats. I drive very conservatively. I decided to do a 'health check' on the Cats and this is what I found on both of them:

Maybe 1,000 miles on them and they are already starting to collapse...or whatever it's called.

Anyway. Gutted now. But just wanted to say that with FI cars, after market Cats are junk and I feel that manufacturers are misrepresenting what these Cats will stand up to. If your car is FI, no cats!

It's only a matter of time before your converter goes on a forced induction car. So get rid of it now, or if your buying long tubes, do NOT waste money on after market converters.

this has been discussed ad nauseum. I think the consensus is it all comes down to the tune. I've had cats with Ted's tune for over a year and my cats look spotless. Glad you caught it.

I wouldn't run cats with boost, just on principle. Less restriction there is, better.
Of course I didn't have cats when I was NA so I'm slightly biased lol.
If your county has no emissions testing, no point wasting money on high flow cats

OP - Is your tune stock and if not what afr are you running at WOT?

My tune is not stock. The car came from SLP with 'their' tune. Whatever a ZL600 comes with.

Since then I added SLP headers/cats, 3.4 pulley, boost-a-pump. Right after the install, the car was tuned by Steve Williams 'Tuned by Frost' @ Performance Autosport. The car actually runs a little rich. Sorry, don't have AFR numbers on hand.

I rarely ever drive the car and do not drive it hard at all. 3800 miles on it. Bought it May 2012 with 6 miles on the Odometer. When I have occasionally gotten 'into it' it runs up very smooth and pulls strong. Very happy with the way it runs.

The spark plugs all look good.

From other forums it seems if you need to run cats with boost or nitrous you should use stock style "porcelain" cats. Especially with spray, don't overdo it with cats or you could melt exhaust valves.

I go catless with power adders.

From WOT if the tune is not correct it can dump unburnt fuel into the cats causing the damage as they are red hot so the shock of the cooling so quick can destroy them in an instant.

Good info to know. Thank you.

On a related note. Gutting those suckers was a real PAIN in the neck. I had to drill and drill. For something starting to fall apart, they did not want to come out at all.

I was pleased that the sound did not change much at all. Just a little bit, but nothing what I was expected.

Interesting.

I always thought that the Cat Overtemp Protection which is in the PCM in stock form does exactly that, i.e. richens the AFR to protect the cats. But maybe too much is then too much?

On the other hand, having low WOT spark advance increases EGT temps rapidly. And having lower than stock advance is very typical with supercharger kits.

I would guess the (higher WOT) spark advance is the main reason why cats last forever in ZL1 or in ZR1.

No, it's the material they are made of. Not as high flowing as high flow cats but survive the higher temps.

Maybe ZL1 and ZR1 are then running higher EGT's than normally aspirated LS engines. Otherwise there would't be a need for having more heat-resistant cats, I guess.

Or if I misunderstood; aftermarket cats are more vulnerable than stock ones? Although those do melt as well sometimes.
