Both are very capable and special automobiles.
I am fortunate to have had a considerable amount of seat time in my fathers C6ZR1 and my ZLE. As has been mentioned the Alpha platform is definitely superior as well as the rear suspension geometry. The predictability and consistency of DSSV is F'N amazing. ZR1 weighs 300 lbs. less than ZLE, 400 less than ZL1 A10. (there is a lot of CF in the body work, brakes etc. very sexy!). Also as mentioned, production was more limited than ZL1, if that is a consideration. I'm thinking however, that it would take something extremely special (while affordable) to pry the ZLE from my hands...perhaps a Z06/Z07 level C8 would do the trick. Best of luck in your decision OP. That's a tough call.

I have both. A 13' ZR1 bone stock and a 17' ZL1/A10 with a throttle body and intake. I love them both. Hard to tell which one is faster but if I had to pick I would say the ZR1 by a hair. I drive the ZL1 more as it more comfortable and I love the 10 speed. When I get into the ZR1 its like a whole new great story all over again. If I had to choose one to keep it would be really hard but I think ZR1 because they didnt make that many of them. Mine is a 60th Anniversary.

Huge thank you to everyone. The feedback here was great. The creature comforts of the ZL1 are hands down. Ended up taking the ZL1 out last night for a few hours. The A10 is something really special.
One question I'm curious about, I'm really interested in the Z06 platform within the C8. Might break the bank but I think that might be a car to consider. Does the ZR1 retain better re-sellability or the ZL1? It'll be a 12 year old car at that point and I feel the C7 Z06/ZR1's will be aggressively priced. Again, huge thanks to everyone. It's been a tough decision either way on making the call and your feedback helps a lot.

Personally, I say go for it. Get the C6 ZR1 and see. Yeah the ZL1 kills it in technology. But in just about everything else, I give the nod to the C6 ZR1. Something about the LS9, the carbon body panels, ceramic brakes, etc. Great sounding, great looking, wicked fast with some mods or stock, and top notch drivers car. I bet very few people here have any seat time in a C6 ZR1. Those who have know what I'm talking about. It cannot be compared to any other C6 Corvette, even one with similar horsepower. If it's your thing, the C6 ZR1 is a highway champion. Perfect gearing and aero for it.
Comparatively, the C7 Z06/ZR1 have the technology of the ZL1 + more performance. Just FWIW. |

Maybe trade for a ZR1 C7. Nothing can beat it. Otherwise, keep the ZL1

If it was the last generation ZR1i would jump on it.
Don’t do it for a C6. Stick with your car.

Id keep the ZL1 as well, just too much of an all around awesome car. Only thing i would consider trading in for would be the up coming C8 Z06 depending if its everything the rumors are saying is true, should be amazing. Gotta keep moving forward and even though the C6 ZR1 is a beast, just to dated to trade a newer car as good as the ZL1 for imo.

That LS9 in the ZR1 was a hell of a LS engine! Used ZR1s retain their value as compared to any other GM cars.

Have to say this is an interesting topic right now. I agree with rest hard to pick a C6 ZR1 - C7 would be a different story.
I have my eyes on the market as we come out of this covid-19 - economic impact - hoping to pick up a few more rental properties and maybe a fun toy. Looking at a similar comparison but for me its zl-1 vs c7 zo6. I feel like the alpha chasis and platform is incredible but since I want a mn6 - curious how folks feel in that scenario. With all the bogging issues - is it a hard justification for ZL1 vs. the c7 zo6? If I was going auto, this would be a no brainer zl1 all the way. |
