How difficult is it to learn to drive stick?

Have never learned, never even had the opportunity to drive one.

There is a great opportunity locally to pick one up, but am nervous about it, especially since it's a ZL1.

Going to go look at it tomorrow but wanted to know if learning on a new car is a good thing, especially a car with so much power.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

once you get 1st gear down it's all a breeze. just takes practice getting comfortable and confident in your ability to get from neutral to 1st smoothly. you could learn it in a couple hours

The power will be a help actually.

Look at all the dopes that can drive a manual. Obviously, there's nothing hard about it. I taught my cousin to drive a manual two days before he got his 2SS. He drove it home like a pro

They'll tell you to "balance" the gas and clutch. Don't believe it

edit:

Westwood, eh? I moved to Canton in 2010 and I grew up in Dedham. Howdy (almost) neighbor

I would honestly learn on a beater car if you have access to one.

Clutches last for all practical purposes the life of the car today. The days of the 30K mile clutch were gone with IROC production

Really, that quick? Do you think the dealer would give me a crash course or something to get the sale?

It's not as difficult as you would think. It just takes some practice getting the feel and confidence. I taught my 17 year old in my SS. You could always have a friend drive it for you to an empty parking lot in order to get the feel of it before hitting the street. These Camaros are very easy to drive with a standard trans.

BANK on them at least trying. To paraphrase Frito:

"They like money"

It's easy. Remember learning to ride a bike? It was hard and intimidating at first. But once you found your groove, it was very simple and fun.

Same deal.

I think the hardest part to me looks like downshifting.

While I know it's totally different I've been really trying to use my tap shifters more with the hope that would help. Not sure if it did or not.

Its easy, I only had 5 mins of practice before I got my 1st manual. Then the next day I took a 500 miles road trip. I'm sure you will learn it pretty quick. Just remember the sweet spot.

The dealer shouldn't have any trouble teaching you stick. It's pretty simple.
