When to order personalized plate?

I have only bought one car brand new and dealer just mailed me my plate. I have a personal plate on my 68 ss but just went to dmv to order and then turned in old plate. So with a new car how would i go about getting my personal plate. Tell dealer once car arrives not to order me a plate that i am gonna order a personalized one? You can't preorder right? I remember one member ordered and attached to current vehicle and did a transfer once their camaro came in, i don't want all that trouble.

Also I listed some choices I thought of just now since everyone else is doing this too.

I guess we can't update poll huh? As I think of further choices i will list them here.

ASKNG4IT (afterall i did pick yellow)

I recently order my plate (see avatar) and I registered it to my old pick up that I'm driving and when the Camaro gets here I'll have dealer do a transfer and go to dmv and get a regular plate for the pick up. Hassle but you can't just order one without a vehicle in FL.

That is what I am doing because I know no other way and I don't want to have a paper tag for 3 months before mine comes in. It really isn't that much trouble. It takes about 10 weeks to get it in.

I checked with my local DMV and they said I had to have a plate on the car prior to obtaining a personalized plate. I tried to get the dealer to order me one but they couldn't. My regular plate only took about 12 days to come in (just picked it up last Friday) now I can order my personalized one

I was going to wait too but didn't want the paper tag on my Camaro.

So I ordered my Personal plates in Feb and got them in three weeks, that was really fast I thought. So when I go get my Camaro, I'll transfer these plates over. No biggie.

I paid my dealer the DMV fee, and he took care of it at the time I signed all the paperwork right before I drove off the lot.

ASKNG4IT (afterall i did pick yellow)

This link at dmv.org has unofficial NC DMV info & links back to NC DMV site
http://www.dmv.org/nc-north-carolina...License_Plates

Here's a link to the North Carolina DMV to check for availability
https://edmv-sp.dot.state.nc.us/sp/P...erviceType=EXP

I tried your "ASKNG4IT" and it appears to be available - the plate image is simulated on-screen when you type it in - surely its centered when produced:

CT is stuck with only 6. Try making a decent plate with 6 letters or numbers. It bites.

At least you're not in Mass.

Vanity Plate Requirements:
1. All vanity plates must start with at least two letters.
2. Passenger, Camper, Livery, Bus, and Commercial vanity plates may contain a maximum of six characters
(letters or numbers) and a minimum of two characters. Vanity plates for antique vehicles may contain a maximum
of four characters and a minimum of two characters. Motorcycle vanity plates may contain a maximum of
five characters and a minimum of two characters.
3. Numbers cannot be used in the middle of a plate; they must come at the end. For example, AAA222 would be
an acceptable Passenger vanity plate; AAA22A would not be acceptable. The first number used cannot be a "0."
4. The letters "I," "O," "Q," and "U" can ONLY be used as part of a word that is clearly defined and correctly spelled.
For example, "LQQK" would not be an acceptable registration number because it is not a correctly spelled word.
5. No periods, spaces, or punctuation marks are allowed.
6. Letter and/or number combinations that convey an offensive message or appear to duplicate an existing registration
plate are not permitted (see reverse side for criteria).
