No cats in Texas

I assume we need them in Texas. Can you guys confirm or deny that we need to have cats to pass emissions? I live in Kaufman county. Trying to find the answer on Google but running into opinion threads only.

Cats are required in every state if they were original equipment.

It's the law. But doesn't mean that everyone follows the law

Not hard to find someone to turn a blind eye in emissions in Texas. Especially if your vehicle has a good chop to it

Won't be hard to find a place that would pass emission w/o cats... I'm catless but worry more about my dark tint then I do cats.

Depends on the city. I think DFW and Houston do emission testing. San Angelo, El Paso, Killeen, San Antonio doesn't. I had cars inspected in this cities and no emission test was done. They did fail me for dumps under the car on my GMC Jimmy in Killeen, because it is not a truck. Had to get a pipe past the rear tire.

Correct, in TX it's based on the county. When I got my inspector license cats are required where emission testing is performed.

Keep in mind that cats are required by Federal Law, whether or not emission testing is required is left to the States, which in turn, as does Texas, leaves the testing requirement up to the counties.

However. You can still get ticketed for not having them, although I think it would be pretty rare for a LEO to actually do a visual inspection on the side of the road. Add that it looks like most aftermarket off road connection pipes give the appearance of a converter.

In Kansas, they did no inspections other than registering an out of state title, then that was only to confirm the car was not stolen.

In MD. it's mostly a OBDII hook up lookin for cel's....I suspect TX is same UNLESS inspection site does visual? If not dynoSteve assured me that his tune would pass ALL emissions, I have ZERO cel, massive power and awesome gas mileage(22'ish).

Do yourself a favor and get on his Q&A thread, super nice, will answer all Q's....peace out...

Visual is part of TX inspect, however, 95% of techs don't crawl under and inspect as it only pays .4 or something like that.
