I've seen short blocks here from 1800 to 5k for long block and accessories.

That surprises me that you can get a short block new for $4500.

Ok. Well I guess that will give me something to figure out. I want to do a 418ci ls3 in the spring but trying to figure out if it's cheaper to do the stroker kit on this motor or get a new motor that is already at a 418

I'm thinking <$1500 for a used shortblock.

IMO sell yours and buy one already built or order one to your specifications. My buddy learned the hard way. His LS3 was stroked into a 429ci and paying labor for this and that he paid 700 more than ordering one already built or have tsp build one. Unless you do your own work. Just qoute one and qoute having yours get machined balanced etc....

u can get a forge short block for 3200 or so. 386 ci or something like that. 416 forged are around 4000. used blocks can go anywhere from 1000 bucks for block only to 5-6 grand complete from what ive seen.

Building engines is not really too difficult if you take your time, have the proper tools, and have good information sources. And even if you have to shell out extra money factoring in the cost of tools, you can still use those tools in the future on other projects. I would recommend buying a short block, getting it fully machined, buying a stroker kit, and then building the short block. After that I'd say get ported or aftermarket heads and a good cam. Take your time and then do the engine install yourself. In the long run you will have bragging rights and a deeper connection with your vehicle. And don't forget that some places offer a tool rental service if you don't want to buy tools. You can even rent engine stands and cherry pickers I believe.

I'll definitely be doing the install myself then getting tuned somewhere. I'm hit trying to figure out which way to go.
