Interesting Dyno....Vararam on G8 GT independent Test

Check this out....Just FYI

"A gain of 10.5rwhp and a torque gain of 7. This gain was not as much as some others had posted which leads me to believe that perhaps the Vararam may gain more on an untuned application or maybe people were testing the stock airbox with a stock tune and the Vararam with a power tune."

That's not very surprising. Anyone who truly believes you can gain 30hp from an air intake should have their head examined.

Granted but I'd say several on here believe that.

That's not suprising, but I remember a good test in GMHTP where they got that gain, on the dyno', on an LS2 'Vette, but got like a .3 improvement on the track. I forget the trap improvement, however, I'll try to find the article tonight and post exact numbers they found. I think I recall a statement from them that the dyno' won't show the 30+ horse' improvement because the dyno' can't duplicate the tuned ram air affect. It probably sounds like I'm drinking the Cool Aid, but I'm going to try to find exactly what I'm trying to quote, so don't judge yet If I'm wrong, I'm wrong

OK - oops; more like 1/2 a horse'...

But - The average 1320' ET was more than .2 better, and the traps were 3 MPH! http://www.gmhightechperformance.com...kit/index.html
Quarter-Mile Test Results
Stock intake
60-ft ET MPH
1. 2.137 12.773 112.62
2. 2.051 12.712 111.63
3. 2.138 12.835 111.92
3-Run Average: 12.773 112.06
VaraRam Snake Charmer intake
60-ft ET MPH
1. 2.116 12.579 115.61
2. 2.064 12.536 114.61
3. 2.084 12.575 114.95
3-Run Average: 12.563 115.06
Average Gain: 0.210 3.00

Good article - you gotta' get to about page six for the meat and potatos.

I'm still holding my opinion out until the final results are released and we start seeing similar gains by members who get this system. Hopefully, they'll be compatable with SC kits

NOTE: They did run a TB spacer with the car too, so I am not claiming this is 100% representative. However, I've read many posts where those spacers do almost nothing for power, so...

My lernin' was that 3-5% was about the best you can expect from an intake with a few flukey exceptions and 1-3% for a cat-back exhaust. And beware any claims outside of that ballpark.

Too bad when the car was BONE STOCK they ran similar times months before in better air.

All the Vararam does is get cooler air, but with all the warping of the intake/injested sand/water hydrolock, it's really a gamble running a Vararam product. TONS of horror stories on the vette forum of terrible quality on the Vararam.....just do a search.

So - the point regarding the air means If they pretty much ran back-to-back runs, the air isn't going to change too much I imagine, so the test was, for the most part, pretty scientific, IMO. It doesn't much matter what the car ran months before if they are going to baseline the car immediately before running the modified test...

I can't refute actual measured data, however, we can only take them for their word, and data (track times, etc.) that they provide. I'm sure members will be doing their own tests, so I figure we'll find out eventually. While the placement of the intake on the 'Vette gets the opening pretty close to the ground, I could swear there's a block-off plate that they had for those cars too for inclimate weather. If I'm mistaken - I'm sorry. I don't know what the other posts have been, and I'll admit to not having one of these systems, nor seeing one in person, myself, however, it seems the me the theory is pretty sound (I'm no engineer though...). IMO - most of the time, when you hear from a person, it's only because they have a complaint. More people complain than say they're happy with a product. Regardless, I know that there are many ways that a product can be mishandle, installed, or mistreated; the same can be said for there are many ways manufacturing can influence the overall quality of a product. Camaro is a different car, and we're being kept in the loop pretty well considering. I think it's best, for those of us who are interested, to give them some time and see how things turn out. I'm sure there are going to be plenty of people who report on how much they liked/disliked the product.

Now - let's get back on topic. We're talking about dyno'/power/tuning
