LS3 Muffler packing insulation question?

Hi all,

Anyone cut open and happen to notice how much packing insulation was inside the LS3 mufflers?

It appears from pics recently posted that the v6 mufflers were loaded with it? Any cut open pics would be great...of LS3 mufflers with packing visible...or anyone who saw how much was in it?

thanks!
J

I would like to know as well.

I kind of like the sound of the stock on the LS3, and if it does have any packing i am sure it will burn out in due time and sound even better.

Plus not to mention the big $$$ saving, over the minimal gains achieved by an after market cat-back setup...

V/R,
Nick

Uhm, I think the V6 Manual and the LS3 have the same exhaust/Mufflers.

Correct me if I am wrong.

There is pic of the LS3 muffler up here. It is straight through, no packing.

From what I've been told, the LS3 mufflers do have packing in them. The packing was removed before the picture was taken.
But the LS3 mufflers are a straight through design.

Can someone else confirm if any packing material is in LS3 Muffler? - the post from ADM Performance replied with NO packing material inside cut away muffler.

I would call Andy at ADM on Monday or send him a private message. I believe he cut open the LS3 muffler and took the picture so he would know.

Minimal gains from a cat-back system?

I wouldn't call 15-20 rwhp and 20+ rwtq a minimal gain. You'll feel that not only in the seat of your pants but in better throttle response.

Everything I have seen thus far is that cat-back's are providing little if any gains over stock exhaust.

THere is about a 1/4 inch of steel wool type material wrapped around the holes nearest the tip. The other holes were open. the material was removed before this pic was taken

Would it be possible to cut the mufflers open and replace the pipes inside with one without holes in it without destroying the can itself? Living here in California I'm going to fail my visual test without having mufflers on the car. And this way if I can take the cans apart and replace the pipes then I've effectively created a muffler delete setup without loosing the can itself so I don't fail visual. Just a thought....let me know what you guys think.

If that is the route you are looking to go I would recomend cutting a door in the top of the cans and when they are reinstalled the inspector won't even be able to see it. I know it's kind of redneck but to realy save money you could use some of the exhaust pipe repair wrap that is available at Autozone to cover the wholes and avoid cutting the pipe. FYI- it will get louder but only a little. The length of the pipes and the cats realy muffle the exhaust on these cars.
