Thoughts on building an engine vs. Super Charging
I am considering having a 418 stroker built. I want a solid engine that will not give me trouble as a daily driver but more power than I have achieved with current mods.
Please give me pro and cons or your recommendation on which route to take. I can actually get this done about $1000 cheaper than a ProCharger Thanks |

I would go with the 2.9 Whipple kit. Safe, reliable and will make huge power on low boost. On 10 lbs and our crappy 91 out here I have seen a few cars make between 515-540 rwhp. The twin screw is way more efficient and fun to drive over a centrifugal. It pulls hard everywhere.

I would have to say that since the stock LS3(I'm hoping this is what you have) is very strong, I would go with the supercharger. The Vortec is probably the most powerfull and reliable system out there. The guys at RMCR in Colorado Springs have been running them for years without any problems on stock motors. And they have proven to put out the most power of any stock supercharged Camaro to date. 638rwhp with the Vortec and exhaust.

Well I am not stock anymore as I have done the following and only reached 471rwhp. I want/need 500 plus to call it a day. My fear is with the mods I already have and add a SC it would be a monster that I would not be able to handle.

With all those mods, I would go with the Vortec. It will use your FAST intake(Whipple and others will not) Should put you WAY over your mark and be reliable.

The Truth is there is No substitute for BOOST, You can have the best of both worlds Stock like driveability with wild HP on tap when you need it and no bottle to run out. A supercharger even at a mild 6 psi boost on your combination will put you around 600 RWHP with no loss in daily driver ability. You have not lived until you experience boost, My other screen name is Addictedtoboost for a reason.

Ted is right. Might be better to get a wider lobe seperation. I'm guessing you are at 112 or maybe even a 110 ls?

Do both! Ideally, if you're going to supercharge, you're going to want to have the engine parts that will handle the wear over time.

My take on this situation is this... blowers are like fake boobs. yea they are nice to look at, but real ones are a lot more fun to play with.:tweetz:
Stroke it, don't blow it. I'm looking for the same thing pope, actually almost the exact same thing(with out messing with the crank and pistons) I have a cam, LT headers, high flow cats, roto fab CAI, and 2.5" cat back. Looking to do heads, intake and TB next, but I'm looking for any info that can get me over that 500 HP hump as well. Have you looked at upgrades to the fuel system yet i.e. bigger rail and injectors, and feul pump, also, what size TB are you running? What are the intake and exhaust port volumes and what do they flow? When your heads were ported did they do the pockets(bowls) behind the valves, and did they do a multi angle valve job? What size chambers do they have. I know I am asking a lot of questions, but like I said before, I'm looking to do the same thing and want the 500+ RWHP result too. |
