1 -4 Shift Light

Ok, I have read reams on here about the factory 1st to 4th shift but it never applied to me until a couple of weeks ago when I got a '13 LS3. I have read the owners manual and it is somewhat confusing as to when the parameters are met for the 1 - 4 shift to activate. I always assumed it would not lock you out of 2nd unless you were really cranking it in first but my car seems to do it randomly and at very low speeds at times. Many times if I actually shifted into 4th I would be lugging the engine. I plan to get the skip shift eliminator very soon but also wanted to ask is my car acting normally? Is this the way the 1st to 4th shift was meant to operate from the factory?

Thanks,

Cady

You can also get it tuned out.
from what I understand, the 1-4 CAGS activates at certain amounts of throttle
Apex Chase did a great write up on it.

I have a skip shift eliminator NIB for sale. PM me if interested. They are not expensive.

CAGS is activated in the 2010-up Camaro SS and ZL1 when:
  • you are in first gear
  • you are using 21% throttle or less
  • you are traveling between 15 & 19 mph
  • and your engine coolant temperature is greater than 169°F (76°C)

I read this in the owners manual but it doesn't make sense to me, or I should say I assumed it would activate if you were winding the car out in first gear.

Either way I will be getting a skip shift eliminator!

Another intrusion by our Government bureaucracy! Get the eliminator or have it tuned out. Mine never bothered me except at the worst possible time like in heavy traffic. Nothing worse than not being in control of your car! Non-intuitive, but quick fix is to push in the clutch and rev it up. So much for gas savings, but much better than lugging and possibly stalling in 4th at an intersection.

Opposite.
Skip Shift activates when you are just creeping along in slow traffic.
Until I installed my APEX Skip Shift Eliminator, mine would activate at the worst possible moment, turning left in heavy traffic.

This. It happens only under relatively light throttle. 21% throttle or less.

This is what caused me to post here. I knew about the 1 - 4 shift but when mine is activating it is absurd to shift into 4th! I wanted to make sure the computer was operating as designed and I didn't have a problem.

Thanks everyone for the feedback!

That is exactly why it is so hated. It activates at the absolute worst moments.

If you're even close to stalling after the 1-4 shift, you need to get something checked. Nor do you need to rev it up, if the icon comes up on the dash, just press the gas pedal 2% more, there's no reason to rev it up. Or press the button on the stalk to cancel it.
