Best way to detail engine bay? Car has 6k miles on it and could use a clean. Plus I have new intake and headers on the way so I want it all to look good.

If it's just a little dirty, I use waterless wash and a bunch of MF towels.

If it's really dirty, you can check out:

How much should it cost to have a professional detailer prepare the surface, clay, polish and then apply ceramic coating? I got a quote of $1500 for the package. Seems really high to me considering you can buy the do-it-yourself kits for under $100.

Depends on the condition of the paint, how much correction it needs, and how perfect you want the paint. I just did a 2019 ZR1 Corvette with 2,800 miles on it and charged almost that same amount. Your paying for labor and experience, if you know what you're doing you can save yourself quite a bit of money, but plan on starting on a Friday afternoon and not finishing until Sunday sometime, or longer. You could be doing something else with your time.

Thanks for the reply. Paying to do all the claybar, polishing, paint restoration, and prep work makes a lot of sense to let a pro do it. I will wait and see what he comes back with. Maybe I will negotiate and ask for car washes or something.

Thanks again.

Here is a great article about DIY ceramic versus having a pro do it, the steps involved, and some product reviews.

Hi Everyone,
Brand new. I just bought a 2012 2ss. Its in super good condition. However, it had not been detailed in maybe forever. The daughter of a big Ford dealership in Orlando owed the car. The first think I did was wash it super good. Then I clayed it and used Mothers CMX ceramic spray. I had to do something pretty immediate, the love bugs are terrible here right now. My ? is I’ve got some itching on the mirrors and hood. Everything is super smooth. I want to wetsand 3000 to 5000, and then use a polish compound, and then reseal with a real Ceramic. The rims are also really nice but need to be polished out. Advice, and did I post correctly? I am super happy with this car. First American car I have had as a daily driver since the 90’s. Just sold my 71 Chevelle ss. Very sad, but hey all good things......
