Autocrossing Video

Went autocrossing again this last weekend. My car still gets so much attention from people its funny. This was my third time, getting faster with every run and having too much fun. First couple runs were on a practice course and last couple were the timed runs on real course, completely stock. Waiting patiently for Pedders parts I ordered.

Nice job with those last two runs! So give me some pointers so I hopefully don't have to start from zero this Spring up here. Did you have it set to Competition Mode? What kind of air pressures seemed to work best?

I ran all laps with traction and stability controls off. Nothing is worse than coming out of a corner hard and trying to get on the gas and the computer says no and kills your power output. I tried it all the diff ways and honestly all off is best and the most fun. Tire pressures that worked best for me are 41 psi in front and 39 in rear, this is hot pressures. I also got one of the CG locks for my seatbelt. This also helped quite a bit because I was sliding around in the seat a lot. I've gone 4 times now and have gotten more comfortable pushing the car every time. Last weekend I was at a novice school and got the fastest time of the day against some cars that are supposed to be much more nimble and suited for autocrossing. I did get a set of rear tires for the front so I have 275/20 all around. this seemed to help the understeer a slight amount but it is definitely still there. I've ordered some pedders parts months ago to help with body roll and am thinking they might not ever show. Hope this helps, any other questions feel free to ask as I'm now a seasoned veteran after my four trips, lol.

nice driving..
im planning on signing up for racing..
just so afraid Im going to get lost with all the cones and look like an idiot.

I sign up for NASA. I like how they give you lesson and go out with an instructor.
I want to sign up for SCCA too.
What organization did u go autocrossing with?

You have no idea how much you have already helped me. Tire pressure was almost exactly what I expected and thank you for the tract/stab control info. I thought that with the weight of our car versus the lighter/smaller/nimble cars, we'd be totally outclassed even with 426-HP. Your reply, especially FTD (congratulations!) gives me hope that we will at least be competitive. How did they class your Camaro? NASA has not listed the 2010.

To GQ4: This is my 3rd season with NASA and SCCA. My 23 YO son and I will double up in my 1SS. Don't worry about the cones. Make sure you walk the track at least two times. Sit in your car, close your eyes and envision the track layout. Also, depending on track layout, I think all of us have looked up and seen a "sea of cones" and gotten confused! It's a blast - just do it, there are so many helpful people you will meet.

Well Im looking at the SCCA North East region NY, Poughkeepsie Sports car club (members of SCCA), and I think Im definately going to do NASA. I like how they give you lessons.
SCCA stuff is confusing I cant find any northeast region event only north jersey. Im trying to get my dad to go but he doesnt want to race

Yes some courses can definitely be confusing to look at. Walking the course like stated before is your friend. I've been hooking up with some of the experienced guys and walking with them and picking their brain and also having some of them ride with me. Also you'll hear a million times to "look ahead." That has been a huge help. The club I've been using is called FAST, it is a local Tampa area club. I'm in the stock tire rearwheel drive class. Being that our cars are so heavy and understeer so badly the old saying slow in fast out is the way to go. This is my first LS motored car and I am very impressed to say the least. I'm the only guy there with a new camaro and everybody loves it and can't believe how will it handles. Can't wait for next month.

Yea the car is heavy. my other car was only 2900lbs LoL.. But this car should be fun. Understeers some but handles not too bad stock. I'll see about rotating it a lil with the throttle on slower autocross courses

It's a hell of a lot of fun. One other thing to think aboutis whether to use first or second gear. First is more fun and gets out of the corners faster but can be very herky jerky. Second gear not as much torque but much smoother. First gear will go to 53 mph or so and second will go down to 20 and still pull fairly well.

well I was thinking first.. second gear only a lil wider since first goes to 52mph and second goes to 76mph

first a lil more jerky but has more low end tq.. plus it not like the car just blows the tires off in first.. just dont floor it till fully out of the turn.. ease into the throttle.. got to be smooth with everything
