In IE go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Programs -> Manage add-ons

Then under "Show" go through each selections and remove everything. Don't worry all your trusted sites will ask you again if you want to enable Active-X. Only do it for trusted sites and be careful with Facebook
I don't usually have add-ons. I always remove them if something is downloaded. The toolbars and extensions are all from Microsoft or Adobe.
I deleted all my search providers except for google. It still didn't work.

I use firefox or opera for what I would call outside the norm sites.

still use IE for some of my core stuff, but social sites n stuff I only used a 3rd party browser.

Do the free MS malicious software live scan. It might just find something bad and then it will remove it. It takes a while to find it on the web site but it is worth the effort.

I know, seems stupid and ironic at the same time...... But I was seriously thinking, "how can I google what's wrong, when it's google that isn't working?"

best free program out, doesn't hog up your computer power and works great.
and they update several times daily / they are on top of any new viruses.

Ive used every virus program brand there is, free and pay, and done so since windows 95, and after a while I would uninstall them for a variety of reasons.

only had avast for a few years now but a few years is amazing, I usually dump them within 6 months and usually for eating up all my gaming power or beign to intrusive.

Only bother is yearly they make you send a request for a new program unlock code. But its free.

Wait, you use Internet Explorer and Vista, and can't figure out why you are having problems?

Let me guess, you've got a dial-up connection too?
